THERE was a sense of déjà vu at the Goffs UK Breeze-Up Sale on Thursday, as records were broken on multiple occasions, as the industry’s big spenders clashed for the top lots.
Unprecedented demand for the most promising juveniles produced two record prices at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale last week, and carried through at Doncaster, where Katie Walsh’s Greenhills Farm sold the venue’s first ever millionaire to Anthony Stroud on behalf of Godolphin.
The Mehmas colt became the third record-breaker of the day, with all three by the Tally-Ho Stud sire. The top lot was enjoying a change of fortune, having been bought by Anna Sundstrom and Filip Zwicky for €140,000 as a foal at Goffs, but bought back for the same price as a yearling at Arqana.
Tally-Ho Stud set a new record price at the sale two years ago, when selling an ill-fated Harry Angel colt to Michael O’Callaghan for £500,000. Michael Fitzpatrick’s Kilminfoyle House Stud topped that high on Thursday when selling a Mehmas filly for £650,000 to Blandford Bloodstock, but Tally-Ho wasted little time in regaining their crown, as a colt by the same sire brought £720,000.
Aside from the history-makers, there were some impressive pinhooking results, none more so that Johnny and Danielle Hurley’s Kodi Bear colt. Bought at Goffs Orby 2 for €9,000, he was resold by their Woodlands Lodge to Godolphin for £500,000 on Thursday.
Former Kildangan Stud sire Profitable has relocated to Turkey, limiting his stock’s commercial appeal, but a smart breeze by a colt from Thomond O’Mara’s Knockanglass Stables saw Blandford Bloodstock stretch to £360,000. O’Mara had given just €16,000 for the relation to Gordon Lord Byron at the Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale.
Later in the session, M.V. Magnier went to £410,000 for a Sioux Nation filly from Ballybush Stables, who had bought the bay for £28,000 at the venue’s Goffs Premier Yearling Sale. Just 10 lots later, Ballybush Stables sold an Ardad colt to Nick Bell and Middleham Park Racing for £200,000, marking an impressive return on the €37,000 they paid at Goffs Orby 2.
