Jonjo and A.J. O'Neill went to £305,000 to buy the top lot at Thursday's Goffs Aintree Sale, a four-year-old named Largy Go, who won a point-to-point at Loughbrickland in Co Down last Saturday for the Crawford brothers.
A son of Poet's Word, Largy Go was a €15,000 foal, and out of four-time winner Jo Go. In winning his 11-runner contest at Loughbrickland he posted the quickest time of the day.
Gordon Elliott will train the next three highest-priced lots, the trio costing a total of £830,000 and all three won point-to-points last Sunday.
Elliott paid £250,000 for Lemmy Caution, the same for With Nolimit, while the trainer co-signed with agent Aidan O'Ryan for Hernando De Soto at £230,000.
Lemmy Caution, by Tunis (sire of Kawmboomga), won at Monksgrange last Sunday for handler Colin Bowe.
With Nolimit, another French-bred, was trained by Jonathan Fogarty to win his maiden at Liscarroll last Sunday.
Ellmarie Holden trained Hernando De Soto (an Irish-bred, by Affinisea) to win at Monksgrange.
Agent Jerry McGrath was another who was busy in the ring, signing for four lots which were headlined by Paddy Turley's Crystal Ocean filly She's A Fair Maid, who sold for £200,000. She also won at Monksgrange last weekend.
Harold Kirk and Willie Mullins purchased two lots, Paddy Turley's Cokoriko four-year-old Lultimatom (won at Portrush in March) for £225,000, and Tom Lacey's UK pointer In A Sonnet (by Poet's Word and a winner at Maisemore) for £135,000.
Agent Ian Ferguson, who often acts on behalf of owner Ronnie Bartlett, paid £200,000 for John Nallen's Minella Marathon, a Blue Bresil gelding who won at Liscarroll last Sunday.
Of the 28 horses sold (from 30 offered) 17 made six-figure sums.
Goffs UK managing director Tim Kent said: “Today has been a wonderful result for this sale and it finished less than £100,000 short of eclipsing the booming sale we enjoyed here in 2022. We knew coming into today that we had a strong catalogue and that was echoed by everyone who saw the horses over the last two days. However, we needed to see that talk transpire into action in the ring and we are thrilled with the results which are befitting a sale and race meeting of the highest stature."
