ONE of the success stories among the first season sires in 2023 was that of Study Of Man. It was no surprise that he should be a success, but most observers would have believed that his stock will be better at three, as he was.

That said, he got off to a great start with nine individual juvenile winners, two stakes horses, and a number of horses who look likely to grow his stakes record as a stallion this year. His star runner is the Paddy Twomey-trained Deepone, and he completed his season with a victory in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes, a renowned race for producing classic winners.

Another son of Study Of Man, Ghorgan, could be a classic hope, and he was runner-up in a €200,000 race in Germany before being group-placed in Italy. Chantilly winner Birthe and the Charlie Johnston-trained Francophone are others to keep an eye on.

Study Of Man won a one-mile newcomers’ race at Saint-Cloud on his only start at two. Runner-up in the Group 3 Prix La Force over a furlong more first time out at three, he advertised his classic potential with an impressive performance in the 10 and a half-furlong Group 2 Prix Greffulhe which he won by three and a half lengths. He duly followed it with classic victory in the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club-French Derby at Chantilly.

Study Of Man chased home Waldgeist in the Group 1 Prix Ganay over that same trip at ParisLongchamp, was runner-up to Zabeel Prince in the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan over nine furlongs and placed in the Group 2 Prix Guillaume d’Ornano and Group 3 Prix Messidor. The latter was over a mile as a four-year-old, and he was only beaten four and a half lengths by Enable in the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on his only attempt at a mile and a half.

The Lanwades sire is the best of four winners out of Second Happiness (Storm Cat) who, like her half-sister Monevassia (Mr Prospector), was placed. That sibling is the dam of juvenile Group 1-star and champion Rumplestiltskin (Danehill) and the grandam of the Group 1 standouts Tapestry (Galileo), Real Steel (Deep Impact) and Loves Only You (Deep Impact).

The latter pair are Japanese-trained horses who made their mark at the highest level on the international circuit and, like Study Of Man, are by the late great Deep Impact (Sunday Silence). Real Steel, who won his only start at two and was a classic performer at three before landing the Group 1 Dubai Turf at Meydan, stands at Shadai Stallion Station and is already responsible for seven stakes winners.

Miesque (Nureyev) was among the all-time great racemares before she became one of the most influential broodmares of the modern era. Kingmambo (Mr Prospector), her son, became a hugely successful stallion. In addition to Kingmambo, Second Happiness is a half-sister to East Of The Moon (Private Account), a dual classic heroine with an outstanding daughter. She is Alpha Lupi (Rahy), dam of the Group 1-stars Alpha Centauri (Mastercraftsman), Alpine Star (Sea The Moon) and Discoveries (Mastercraftsman). Miesque’s descendants include Group 1-scorers Amanee (Pivotal) and Karakontie (Bernstein), whereas one of her siblings gave us the brilliant Six Perfections (Celtic Swing).

Retired to stud in 2020, and sire of 11 winners, of 13 races, and £275,198, including DEEPONE (GB), Ghorgan (GER), Alacrity (GB), Birthe (Ire), Look Upon (GB), Francophone (GB), Star Studied (GB), Lingua Franca (GB), Sons And Lovers (GB), Kalpana (GB), and Jubilee Walk (GB).
