STRONG trade at the first Irish yearling sale was well-received by vendors, but a different test awaits at the Goffs Orby Sale on October 1st and 2nd. Described as Ireland’s premier yearling sale, it holds higher expectations from buyers and consignors alike, with 2023’s increased average of €122,764 an indication of the calibre of horses on offer.

Next week’s catalogue is slightly thinner than 12 months ago, with 512 yearlings listed, which should help maintain the 2023 clearance rate of 87%. A large number of international buyers was a key factor in last year’s strong renewal, which saw an increase in the number of yearlings selling for €500,000, €250,000 and €100,000.

The prospect of winning a €50,000 bonus race, or indeed the prestigious Goffs Million, was a major draw, and Goffs have announced they are doubling the number of bonus races in 2025, which will also expand to the UK for the first time. All lots are eligible for the Goffs Two Million Series, as are all those entered in Orby Book 2, which sees 480 yearlings sell on October 3rd and 4th.
