THE old saying ‘a little help is worth a lot of pity’ springs to mind this week. With equestrian sport very largely suspended during the past two years, the safety net provided by over €2 million in Covid supports for HSI affiliates doubtless largely kept the proverbial wolf from the door.

None of these things happen by themselves of course and the government money was provided via the key channels of Sport Ireland and Horse Sport Ireland. Hats off to all involved for their vital work in this quarter. It’s good to see Ministerial visits happening at HSI headquarters - Minister Charlie McConalogue’s visit has now been followed up by Ministers Martin Heydon and Jack Chambers. The more political awareness there is of our sector the better off our industry will be - the Irish equestrian sector has definitely suffered in past years by being largely invisible on the political radar.
