ON an afternoon when trainer Willie Mullins sent out a 113,999/1 across the card eight-timer, the success of Bachasson in the Grade 3 Bar One Racing Chase was the highlight of a treble at Cork.

Sent off at 6/4 favourite, the Catherine O’Connell-owned 12-year-old made all the running to score by three and-a quarter-lengths.

Winning jockey Sean Flanagan reported: “That’s my third ride for Willie and my second winner, so I’ll try and keep up the strike-rate!” He added: “Bachasson was attacking his fences and was very quick through the air.

“Obviously he liked the bit of nicer ground today and did it well. He is very, very clever and still has loads of enthusiasm.”

The first of the Mullins winners came via Mister Policeman who struck on his Irish debut in the Bar One Racing Bet 10 Euros Get 50 Euros Sign Up Offer Hurdle.

The former French trained gelding, who was sent off a well-supported even money favourite, had two-and-a-quarter lengths to spare over stablemate Cash Back. Carrying the colours of Mrs Susannah Ricci, the five-year-old was the first leg of a treble for Michael O’Sullivan.

The latter, riding his first winner for Willie Mullins, said: “I’m obviously very grateful to Mr Mullins and the Riccis for putting me on him and he is a lovely horse who has a big future. It was very straightforward and he’ll come on a lot for it.

“He will get a trip and is very relaxed and I had to wake him up once or twice. He is very clever to jump and is a nice prospect.”

Aione was the third Mullins winner and second for O’Sullivan when also carrying the Ricci colours to success in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners Chase.

Sent off at 4/1, the gelding stayed on strongly to repel runner-up Largy Debut by half-a-length. O’Sullivan said: “He had every right to win that but did it well and jumped brilliantly. He backed off a small bit the last day so I wanted to keep the rev’s up and in fairness he didn’t miss a beat jumping.

“He won with plenty in hand. The ground is drying out all day and the chase track is a good bit quicker.”

First treble

O’Sullivan completed his first treble under rules when winning the Grade B Bar One Racing Price Boosts Handicap Hurdle on L’yser for Barry Connell.

The 9/4 favourite, who also races in the trainer’s silks, kept on well to beat Legacy Thor by half-a-length. Connell reported: “The danger (Spillane’s Tower) went at the second which simplified the matter and other than the two of those, the others looked fairly exposed.

“Our lad beat a well-handicapped horse at Fairyhouse and the two pulled well clear so we were expecting him to come and win today. The ground is perfect for him and it opens up options.

“I’m tempted to go chasing straight away as he is a big horse who might have more respect for a fence,” he added.

Light shines out for McCann

LUMINOUS Light was the first leg of a double for Sean Flanagan when taking the opening Dermot Casey Tree Care Maiden Hurdle. The 9/2 chance beat Mighty Mo Missouri by two lengths.

Trainer Anthony McCann reported of the Good Counsellors Syndicate owned winner: “The owners are the Good Counsel School in New Ross and Sean (Flanagan) went to school there. It is great to get a winner for them and the connection comes from another former pupil Jonathan Moore (jockey) who advises me.

“I think he’ll handle any ground but I think he’ll be better on better ground. Hopefully he can improve now and tip on.” All About Lucy gave her supporters a few scares when jumping badly left on her way to winning the O’Flynn Motors Mallow Mares Maiden Hurdle.

Sent off at 13/2, the John Sayers-owned six-year-old won by half-a-length for trainer Eoin McCarthy. The latter said: “She is a lovely, big tough filly and will be lovely for chasing next year. We’ll probably give her one more run and then she’ll go out for the summer.

“Nothing went right for her at Wexford and a loose horse was all over the place but we learned an awful lot about her after her Limerick run. If it dries out too quick she’ll go out on holidays.”

Elsannah’s Power-packed finish

RECENT Naas scorer Elsannah was back in the number one spot following the Mallow Commercials CVRT Test Centre Handicap Hurdle.

Ian Power was seen at his strongest in getting the 6/1 chance home by a head from the rallying King Ferdinand.

Winning trainer Shane Crawley praised the ride on the Grellan Dunne-owned mare: “Ian gave her a lovely ride and was confident on her with a lap to go. He had her exactly where he wanted her, she travelled everywhere and battled well up the straight so is learning her game all the time.

“We might have to put her away now due to drying ground as she is a real National Hunt type – I won’t be taking any chances with her.” Will Do ended a series of frustrating placed efforts when taking the concluding Jim Ryan Racecourse Services (Pro/Am) INH Flat Race under John Gleeson.

The Gigginstown-owned gelding, sent off at 6/4 joint favourite, battled back on the run-in to see off Ballystone and win by a head.

Winning rider Gleeson said: “He is a good staying horse and it is good to get him off the mark in bumpers. He had run well each time in bumpers but hit the cross-bar so it was nice to get one under his belt.

“He would strike you as more a staying chaser in time and three-miles over fences will be his forte.”
