1.40 Castle Star At Capital Stud Irish EBF Maiden 5f
With no previous form to go on, a certain amount of guesswork is involved. As a half-sister to a juvenile winner, who later went on to pick up blacktype, Stonezilian is put forward. Trainer Adrian Murray is usually quick off the mark with his two-year-old runners and this daughter of Acclamation appears to be well-drawn against the stands rail. Slaney View would almost certainly prefer further in time, but Jim Bolger’s filly has to be of interest. The stable has introduced some nice debutants at this opening meeting of the season in previous years, so their representative has to be respected.
SELECTION: STONEZILIAN

Ground concerns aside, Mount Ruapehu is interesting on stable debut for Mark Fahey. A well-handicapped gelding, the five-year-old is proven over this trip and tends to run well off a break. He is also joining a young trainer who does particularly well with his new recruits. However, there has to be a slight worry about testing conditions, as his best form is on a sounder surface. Dark Viper, who remains a maiden after 18 starts, looks a serious threat. At his best in the early part of the season, the Jessica Harrington-trained four-year-old has twice finished runner-up on the back of a break.
SELECTION: MOUNT RUAPEHU

A chance is taken on Go Athletico on his first start since rejoining Ado McGuinness. An eight-time winner, the gelding has always been at his best with an ease in the ground. Having dropped down the weight in recent times, the seven-year-old has to be of interest on his first run in a handicap. The fact Colin Keane takes the ride is encouraging. Big Gossey, who loves it at this track, has to be respected - despite his huge weight. The grey has returned in rude health, finishing second at Dundalk in two recent starts.
SELECTION: GO ATHLETICO

Irish 1,000 Guineas entrant Bint Queen Kindly can make a winning racecourse debut. A half-sister to two winners, including one placed at blacktype level, the Dermot Weld-trained filly must be showing plenty at home to warrant that entry. In a maiden, where the form of those that have already raced is nothing out of the ordinary, she can make the perfect start.
Murkala sets the standard amongst those with previous experience. The Johnny Murtagh-trained filly attained an official rating of 82 after three outings as a juvenile. Given that her half-brother was at his best in testing conditions, she may well improve for this easier ground.
SELECTION: BINT QUEEN KINDLY

The Paul Flynn-trained Cheers Again can land this first big cavalry charge of the season. Somewhat unlucky not to win a similar race over course and distance last May, the six-year-old can gain compensation under Joey Sheridan. Proven on testing ground, the gelding should be spot on for this race after a recent spin at Dundalk.
Raadobarg has to be a strong contender on his third appearance in this contest. Winner in 2022, he missed the following year before finishing a close up third 12 months ago. Off a mark 10lb lower than last year, he has to be a danger.
SELECTION: CHEERS AGAIN
Next best: Raadobarg

Runner-up on both starts to date, First Wave can open his account here. The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt was narrowly denied on his racecourse debut at this track in early October. Reappearing at Dundalk just over three weeks later, he again found one too good. With the benefit of those experiences to call upon, he can go one place better.
Mister Adam made a hugely encouraging debut when fourth over course and distance, but failed to build on that when filling a similar position at Dundalk after. Perhaps the step up to 10 furlongs or faster ground were to blame for that slightly disappointing effort.
SELECTION: FIRST WAVE

The Kieran Cotter-trained Martinelli can make a winning reappearance under champion jockey Colin Keane.
A winner at Killarney last October, the Blue Point gelding didn’t enjoy much luck in running, when subsequently beaten at Gowran Park. Still relatively unexposed, the four-year-old is at his best on soft ground.
Twice a winner last season, Pandion Power remains of interest, despite his higher rating. Rory Mulligan gets on particularly well with the Johnny Murtagh-trained four-year-old.
SELECTION: MARTINELLI

Alfred Tennyson can shed his maiden tag on the first start of his three-year-old career.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt ran well on a few occasions last season in maidens that have worked out nicely. With an official rating of 87, he sets a fair standard for his rivals to aim at. A high draw close to the stands rail is also a benefit over this sprint trip.
Ballintogher is a gelding that could outrun his odds, if handling the testing conditions.
A speedy sort, who ran a huge race when drawn away from the main pace on his final start as a juvenile, the son of Gregorian could be very smart.
SELECTION: ALFRED TENNYSON
Next best: Ballintogher
