2.40 Ladbrokes Champion Chase (Grade 1) 3m
Delta Work: Not quite the force of old until finishing second in the Grand National, so maybe he now prefers a greater test than he’ll get today. He won his beginners chase here back in the day, but only managed two fourths and a fifth when attempting this race before.
Envoi Allen: Won two years ago on his seasonal return and went close last year, though he had the benefit of a run that time. Like last year’s winner, he would probably prefer softer ground.
Gerri Colombe: Successful last year, though not by as far a margin as his short price suggested he would. He would probably prefer softer ground, but certainly has the class to overcome that.
Hewick: Connections’ decision to supplement him at a cost €15,000 speaks volumes, and he has the benefit of a recent run, finishing a respectable third in a Grade 3 at Punchestown. The ground will be to his liking - his Grade 1 wins came on good and yielding.
Visionarian: Though the lowest rated of the field, it would be wrong to dismiss this nine-year-old. Grade 1-placed as a novice, he was back on track last time out when beating a small but talented field in a Grade 2. The ground will also work in his favour.
Conclusion:
Envoi Allen, Gerri Colombe and Hewick look closely matched, with Shark Hanlon’s hope getting the vote for race fitness and ground preference. The same work in Visionarian’s favour, so he shouldn’t be dismissed at a big price.
Gordon Elliott has won six of the last 10 runnings, including with smart types, such as Quilixios and Mega Fortune. His French recruit Lakota Blue is intriguing, but it’s hard to judge the form of his debut win.
Slurricane’s debut third over hurdles has been boosted by the second’s subsequent win, and Janes Harbour beat another subsequent winner when third last time out. In contrast, the form of Prairie Angel’s maiden hurdle win hasn’t worked out so well.
SELECTION: JANES HARBOUR
Next best: Lakota Blue
1.00 Tayto Group Maiden Hurdle 2m 190y
Another race that Gordon Elliott has won with talented horses in the past, namely Ballyadam, Envoi Allen and Mighty Potter, and Champion Bumper second Romeo Coolio looks the best of today’s quartet.
Ivybrook didn’t show much on his only previous start in a bumper, but he was well-supported that day and has a nice pedigree. Cutthewire’s hurdle bow was encouraging, as was Presenting Max’s.
Viceregent is the most experienced, having paced over hurdles on five occasions, but it’s hard to see him getting his head in front here, especially after over a year off the track.
SELECTION: ROMEO COOLIO
Next best: Cutthewire
1.35 Eventsec Handicap Hurdle 2m 190y
A prize fund of €40,000 has attracted a classy field, including Grade 2 winner Kala Conti, who benefits from seven-pound claimer Carl Millar.
Stablemate Golden Joy is of interest as he steps down in class, as are Listed winner Brucio, Fred Winter fourth Harsh, talented dual-purpose performer Helvic Dream and the 10-year-old topweight Enniskerry.
Man O Work, a listed winner last year, may need to come further down the weights to return to winning ways. Lieber Nicc remains unexposed and his maiden hurdle form has worked out well. Ninth Titan’s last start is a concern, but previous runs put him in the mix.
SELECTION: KALA CONTI
Next best: Golden Joy
2.10 Eventco Marquees Handicap Chase 3m
Hascoeur Clermont ran well last time out and softer ground should be to his liking. There should also be more to come from Banjaxed, following a promising seasonal return, while the trip may bring improvement from Valsorpresa.
Potters Party is inconsistent, but should be in the mix off his best form, the same applying to History Of Fashion, though you need to look further back to find his last good run.
SELECTION: HASCOEUR CLERMONT
Next best: Banjaxed
3.20 Grade 2 Bottlegreen Ladies Day 2024 Chase 2m 3f 120y
A small field is typical of this race, and some were probably deterred by the presence of dual Grade 1 winner Found A Fifty. It’s hard to see anything beating him, especially considering that he won or finished second on all his previous starts over fences.
Galway Plate victor Pinkerton looks his nearest rival, while the seven-time graded-placed Lucid Dreams seems unlikely to gain an elusive blacktype win today. The latter is closely matched by progressive chaser The Big Chap.
SELECTION: FOUND A FIFTY
Next best: Pinkerton
3.50 Ladbrokes (Pro/Am) INH Flat Race 2m 190y
Like much of the card, Gordon Elliott has dominated previous runnings of this race, his eight-year stranglehold coming to an end 12 months ago. Impressive four-year-old maiden winner Classic Creek may be a safer bet than Koktail Brut, given that the latter was one of only two finishers, when he won his debut by 25 lengths. That didn’t deter his current trainer from giving €250,000 for him in May, however.
Mileview shaped like a promising type, when finishing second at Loughanmore last April, the winner later selling for £260,000, but Colin McBratney’s charge hasn’t been seen since then.
Of the remainder, Hunsaker should be considered as a half-brother to a bumper winner.
SELECTION: CLASSIC CREEK
