COLIN Keane and Ger Lyons dominated proceedings with the pair teaming up for a treble and the champion jockey going one better on the evening by completing a 37/1 four-timer.

Lady Iman was undoubtedly the headline act and confirmed pre-race rumours that she was above average with an impressive debut victory in the Irish EBF Median Sires Series Maiden.

The daughter of Tally-Ho Stud’s first season sire Starman was sent off the 4/6 favourite and, after showing signs of greenness when striking the front over a furlong out, kept on really well in the closing stages to beat Stop The Nation by three and a half lengths.

“She’s a beauty and I haven’t taken her off the bridle ever at home. She has been doing everything easy, and I’ve been given her (by Tony O’Callaghan) to promote the stallion,” said Lyons.

“I have three by Starman, two colts, and she is more of a man than the two lads put together. The one thing the three of them have in common is their brilliant temperament.

“I think she is a smart filly, and I want to win that stakes race (Group 3 on May 18th) in Naas. I have been second in it a few times and hopefully she is good enough. The dream is still alive!”

Winning debut

Mallavelly made a successful Irish debut for Lyons and Keane in the Willie Buckley Memorial Maiden. The Siyouni filly, bought out of Jane Chapple-Hyam’s yard for 68,000gns after showing useful placed form last year, was available at 13/2 overnight and was backed into an 11/4 chance before leading over a furlong out to beat Shaool by a length and a half.

“We don’t work her at home. She is a little bit temperamental, so we have been cuddling her and doing plenty on the sand.

“This presented itself and I said I wasn’t going to start her on soft ground,” said Lyons.

“I thought if she ran to an English 78, she would be there or thereabouts and congratulations to David Spratt and Phil Burns of Gaelic Bloodstock who have been finding horses for me for years.”

Hat-trick

Woodshaw Whisper completed the Lyons/Keane treble in the William Hill Best Odds Guaranteed Maiden. Michael Enright’s homebred finished well on debut over a mile at Leopardstown last autumn for Michael Halford and Tracey Collins and was having his first run since for Glenburnie Stables.

The 5/4 favourite made headway towards the far side to lead over a furlong out before keeping on well to beat Propose by a length and a quarter.

Lyons commented: “Very straightforward horse, kicked into gear when we went that extra furlong or two with him. He liked the surface and at the minute he is a handicapper so we will see where he progresses.”

Colin Keane one better than Lyons with a four-timer

COLIN Keane went one better than Ger Lyons when successful aboard Billie Frechette who appreciated the step up to two miles in the William Hill Top Price Guarantee Handicap.

The dual-purpose filly, available at 7/2 in the morning and sent off the 7/4 favourite, led over a furlong out.Despite drifting left, she kept on well to repel the challenge of Slowdownbarney by a neck.

Winning trainer Noel Meade said: “Colin is a big help! She stayed on well, but I’d say a mile and a half is okay too. It’s great to see her winning and I think she can do that over hurdles, so we will see how we go.”

Notforalongtime recorded his sixth course win and ninth in total when turning the Dundalk Stadium Group Deals Available Apprentice Optional Claiming Race into a procession.

Facile victory

Rory Mulligan’s mount led early in the straight and, after asserting over a furlong out, kept on strongly for a facile four-and-three-quarter-length verdict over Roman Harry at odds of 13/2.

Owner/trainer Laura Hourigan said: “He does like it up here. The last day there was nothing to gallop at really, but today there was loads of pace and he just followed it in.

“There’s another meeting here in two weeks, but I also have the grass with him where he has a good mark.He wants good ground.”

Circles lands a comfortable success

CIRCLES recorded her fourth career win over seven furlongs in the Saturday 12th July Ladies Day At Dundalk Handicap. The Rita Shah-owned 7/1 shot led early in the final furlong under Luke McAteer for a comfortable length and a half verdict over Macadam’s Rock.

McAteer said: “She did it well and travelled well everywhere. Sometimes with these fillies, when they click, they click.

“It is always nice to get a winner for Anthony (McCann, trainer) who has been a good supporter of mine through the years.”

Flier, trained by Denise Foster for Richard Wilmot-Smith, got off the mark at the 23rd attempt when coming out best in a highly competitive Friday Fixtures Until 11th April Handicap.

There were still plenty of the 13 runners in contention as they stretched right across the track over a furlong out, and Gary Carroll got Flier (13/2) motoring between horses to beat 2/1 favourite Chopsticks by half a length.

“She has her level and things worked out there today and she got her turn. She stuck her head out and she tries,” said Carroll.
