BERNARD Shaw wrote his own winning chapter in Dundalk with a powerful performance under Wayne Lordan in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden over a mile.

Aidan O’Brien’s colt came off the bridle in the final couple of furlongs but, once the 1/2 favourite took over approaching the final furlong, he powered home to score by a widening nine-lengths for Derrick Smith, Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Peter Brant.

Stable representative Chris Armstrong said: “He’s a smashing colt and Wayne gave him a lovely ride. He had a very good run the first day at the Curragh and it was an eye-catching run in a maiden that is working out well.

“He was still very green throughout the run even once he got him straightened up. Wayne thinks there’s lots of improvement in him.

“He is a horse to look forward to for the backend and he will be in the mix for something like the Champion Juvenile at Leopardstown.”

Up in trip

A step up in trip worked the oracle for Marble Angel in Division 1 of the Bar One Racing Guaranteed Multiples All Shops Handicap.

Lordan, who was partnering a double on the card, rode her to the front a furlong and a half out and she was strong at the business end in coming home by two and a quarter lengths at 10/1 for owner J.P. Ledwidge.

Trainer Andy Oliver said: “We brought her here actually as a lead horse about two weeks ago and she seemed to handle it.

“It was over a mile and I thought ‘gosh, I’ll run her back one more time’.”

Flynn keeps up run of form

PAUL Flynn saddled the winners of the opening two races on the card including a rare juvenile success for his stable in the Irish EBF Auction Series Fillies Maiden.

Inns Of Court filly Ms Willpower travelled well to lead a furlong and a half down for Dylan Browne McMonagle and scooted in by a comfortable three and three-quarter lengths at 12/1 for the KLF Partnership.

Flynn said: “It is kind of our first venture into buying two-year-olds. This one was backward, but recommended by Tally-Ho (Stud) - they are some operators. They said this was the one for me last year. We are very happy now.

“Hopefully, we can sell this one and move on to another one. That’s the plan.”

Excellent season

Little Queenie continued her excellent season with victory in the Bar One Racing Bet 10 Get 50 Sign Up Offer Mourne Handicap over six furlongs.

She tussled with Moltophino a furlong and a half out, but proved stronger in the closing stages as she went on by a length and a half for jockey Robert Whearty.

After the 13/8 favourite took the honours for owner Michael J Connolly, Flynn said: “We will probably try to get her into a Listed race at Tipperary, she won’t run in the Group 3 at Naas. We’ll see how that goes - that Tipperary race could suit her well.”

Halford outsider springs surprise

MICK Halford and Tracey Collins fired three darts at the featured Irish Stallion Farms EBF Red God Handicap and it was 18/1 shot Ameerat Jumaira who sprang a surprise by three-parts of a length for owner Isa Bin Haider.

Niall McCullagh’s mount conjured up a strong finish down the outer to catch Star Harbour close home.

Halford said: “I think she is better on a real level track going left-handed. This prize was very good and I just said to the owners we would wait for that with her.”

Slieve Binnian took third while Ridhaz was fourth for Halford and Collins.

Breakthrough

Dermot Weld’s Settlement made the breakthrough at the eighth time of asking in the Bar One Racing Price Boosts All Channels Apprentice Maiden.

The Kingman filly had put together a trio of third places on her last three starts and delivered here at 4/1 for Juddmonte.

She was always in the box seat just off Cuban Confusion and came home best to collar him in the closing stages. The winner went on by a length and a half from the 9/4 joint favourite.

Jockey James Ryan said: “I hit a bit of a flat spot coming past the three (pole) but, once I grabbed her up again coming up the straight, I always felt like I was going to get on top of the horse that finished second. She did it well.”

Rock Etoile (11/2) bounced back to form in Division 2 of the Bar One Racing Guaranteed Multiples All Shops Handicap.

The six-year-old gelding, ridden by Cian Horgan, got to grips with front-runner Seas And Oceans over a furlong out and saw him off by three-quarters of a length at the end of the mile trip.

“He was well handicapped on his old form. He’s had a few issues, we had to burn his palate and things like that,” trainer Andy Slattery said.

“He had a good run in Leopardstown last Thursday which probably entitled him to be there or thereabouts.”

Local win

Gardone (17/2) brought his homework to the track in the Bar One Racing Your No1 Bookmaker Handicap.

Chris Hayes produced his mount a furlong and a half out and the pair soon led. They made the best way home from there to score by two lengths for trainer Eric McNamara.

Joint owner Colman Smith said: “We wanted to race as close to the north so we decided on Dundalk to try and get Robbie (F White, joint owner) and I out for a day - Robbie hasn’t seen him run. We are from Ballyholland, just outside Newry.

“We chat a lot to Conor (McNamara) and he really liked Gardone and was puzzled many a time. He said he was making a fool of him, but thank God for today.”
