DYLAN Browne McMonagle rode a treble at Dundalk that included a dead-heat on Joseph O’Brien’s Beautiful Dawn in a thrilling finish to The Irishinjuredjockeys.com Handicap at Dundalk on Wednesday afternoon.

Just the three runners went to post for that seven-furlong contest and it looked like 1/3 favourite Beautiful Dawn would lead her rivals home when she took a narrow lead approaching the final furlong, however, Rebelsontherun (6/1) and Jamie Powell stayed on to dispute close home and the judge couldn’t split the pair. Blue Soul finished a head behind the pair in a close third.

“She picked up nicely and I felt like we put the race to bed, but the boys were always breathing down my neck,” Browne McMonagle, in John C Oxley’s colours, said.

Powell, sporting P E Ryan’s silks for Michael O’Callaghan, said: “It probably suited my lad the way the race unfolded - I was able to get rolling early, took a bit of time to get into gear but, to be fair, passing the furlong (pole) he was in top gear and hit the line well.”

O’Brien’s Andalusian Star, returning off an absence of more than six months, was backed down to 8/13 favourite for The Gateway Hotel Dundalk Race & Stay Fillies Maiden and made all for Browne McMonagle.

She was green throughout and had an encounter with the stands’ side rail in the final furlong, but she showed plenty of engine in coming in by a length and a-quarter for owner Shapoor Mistry.

Browne McMonagle said: “It is not ideal sometimes when they are that green and you have to make the running.

“I felt like she was the best in the race and she went on in the final furlong, and was only just doing what she had to do. I always felt I had them covered, but it was just a case of keeping her up to her work and keeping her straight.”

Drove

Browne McMonagle then drove 2/1 favourite Neddies Boy home by a head for Ray and Gillian Cody in division 1 of The Happy Valentine’s Day From Dundalk Stadium Handicap.

The six-year-old gelding always held a prominent pitch and led narrowly inside the final two furlongs. He was headed in the closing stages by Hinemoa, but rallied to get up on the line by a head on his first start for the stable.

Trainer Ray Cody said: “In all fairness to Robbie Burns, he came to me fit. I did nothing only keep him ticking over since I got him.

“Dylan actually said that a mile and a-half is the minimum for him, he reckons two miles. He said the further he goes the better.”

Another Dundalk double for McConnell

JOHN McConnell continued his good form on the polytrack as he saddled the winners of the final two races on the card.

Keithen Kennedy has been picking up rides, and winners, for McConnell and produced Noble Crusade at the furlong pole in the second division of The Happy Valentines Day From Dundalk Stadium Handicap. His mount found generously to roll home by four and a quarter lengths for the No More After Hours Syndicate.

McConnell said: “In fairness, the horse had come down a lot in the weights. He had lost his way a bit and has had some physical issues. They have been what’s holding him back.”

Siobhan Rutledge is now three from five on Yokkell after the pair won a battle with Garrick Painter in The View Restaurant At Dundalk Stadium Handicap over an extended mile and a quarter.

The Fast Company mare switched to McConnell in the autumn and has been in terrific form for owner Seamus Devlin.

“She’s super, she would nearly make you emotional. She’s just very genuine and very tough,” McConnell said. “Siobhan gets on very well with her and gave her a peach of a ride just in behind the leaders. I think she knew from halfway down the straight she was going to get up.” The Shadow Lingers made a winning debut for owner/trainer Luke Comer at 66/1 in the Book Online @ DundalkStadium.com Maiden.

The Dick Whittington four-year-old was raw, but moved into contention a quarter of a mile out and stayed on strongly in the final furlong to draw four and a quarter lengths clear under Jack Kearney.

Assistant trainer Jim Gorman said: “He showed us lots, but he is very green. We are delighted to get him here and we’ll see how he comes on from that.”

Riyami relishes two-mile test again

RIYAMI continues to relish two miles in Dundalk as he won over the trip for the third time in The Dundalk Winter Series Leading Trainer & Jockey Championship Handicap.

Joey Sheridan rode a patient race on Denis Hogan’s charge and the duo progressed to lead inside the final furlong before outstaying Rockview Consort by half a length at 4/1.

Sheridan said: “He loves two miles and needs it. He needs that surface too. Patrick O’Brien, Ben Carthy and the Rogers’ (Partnership) are kind of a new involvement in him and they picked the right horse.

“This surface up here and good ground are the keys to him, and they will have plenty of fun with him over the summer.”

Theriverrunsdeep (11/2) got back to winning ways for owner/trainer Seamus O’Donnell in The Put The Fun In Fundraising At Dundalk Handicap over six furlongs.

Seamie Heffernan sat in the box seat off front-running No Speed Limit and came through to lead a furlong down. Heffernan kept her up to her work to score by a length and a quarter.

“She’s good, that’s her fifth time winning for me,” O’Donnell said. “He (Heffernan) said he got a lovely lead off No Speed Limit all the way and found off it.”
