Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis - Bayerisches Zuchtrennen (Group 1)
THE favourite Fantastic Moon suffered a surprise defeat in the Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis - Bayerisches Zuchtrennen at Munich last Sunday. And more surprisingly, it was not by the two three-year-olds who looked his biggest rivals.
Victory by a length went to French-trained Calif, ridden by Adrie de Vries.
The German-bred five-year-old by Areion, trained by father and son training partnership Carlos and Yann Lerner and bred by Gestut Brummerhof. He had been an easy three-length winner of the Group 3 La Coupe at ParisLongchamp in early June.
Prominent here on officially soft going, he was shaken up under two furlongs out and responded to lead over a furlong out, drawing clear towards the finish.
Fantastic Moon was ridden two and a half furlongs out, went second, but was unable to reach the leader. Westminster Moon took third, and well-fancied three-year-old Wintertraum finished sixth.
