A NUMBER of blacktype National Hunt horses feature in 66 lots catalogued for the Tattersalls Online March Sale, for which bidding opens at 11am next Wednesday (March 5th) and closes from 11am on Thursday (March 6th).

A Cheltenham Festival entry in the Fred Winter Hurdle boosts the appeal of the Olly Murphy-trained Static (Lot 93), who finished second in the Grade 2 Prestbury Juvenile Hurdle over course and distance in November. The bay was narrowly denied in a listed hurdle on his previous start, his first in the UK, having won twice in his native France.

Willie Mullins’ four-time winner Horantzau D’Airy (Lot 25), will be offered with an entry for the Aintree Grand National. The now eight-year-old finished second in the Kerry and Munster Nationals early in the season, having previously placed in a listed hurdle 12 months prior.

Wide appeal

Breeders, as well as owners and trainers, are likely to be interested in Lily Du Berlais (Lot 35), who won the Grade 2 mares’ bumper at the 2022 Dublin Racing Festival. Stuart Crawford’s charge placed in the same race a year later and later gained Grade 3 blacktype over hurdles. Eight blacktype winners feature under the Shirocco mare’s second dam, including Grade 1 scorer Bonito Du Berlais.

On the Tattersalls Online site, Dan Skelton states that Grade 1 performer Cherie D’Am (Lot 58) “has unfortunately sustained a small SDFT injury. She would return to training given time off to recover or would make a fantastic broodmare.”

Runner-up in a Grade 2 and third in the Grade 1 Sefton Novices’ Hurdle won by Dancing City, the Great Pretender mare won a listed mares’ chase in December, but fell next time out in a Grade 2 won by Handstands. Out of a Flemensfirth mare, she shares her page with top-class chaser Direct Route and Grade 1 winner Joe Mac.

Skelton’s Lodge Hill Stables also offers Frisky Whiskey (Lot 20), an unraced four-year-old filly by Doyen, out of Grade 1-winning hurdler United.

Among the lots to interest flat breeders are three mares offered by Monanny Farm on behalf of the late Paul Callan. Flirtare (Lot 91), a half-sister to Tyros Stakes runner-up Turin Spangled, from the family of Attraction, is offered with a colt foal by Harry Angel.

The black-type Verglas mare Petits Potins (Lot 88) may benefit from future updates, as her four-year-old Wonder Kid progressed to a rating of 95 last season, while So Dandy (Lot 90) has already produced a stakes winner in Dickiedooda.

Something for everyone

A draft from Haras de Pierrepont includes Menandore, in foal to Dark Angel’s dual Group 1-winning juvenile Angel Bleu. A Group 3 winner as a three-year-old, he stood his first season at €9,000. Hollymount House Stud’s septet comprises of both flat and National Hunt prospects. Their Aga Khan-bred mare Maziyda (Lot 85) is a half-sister to two stakes horses, including Massinga, who sold for €80,000 after her progressive three-year-old fetched €105,000. Fellow flat broodmare Edge Of The World (Lot 82) is a winning half-sister to dual listed winner Selinka, herself the dam of multiple stakes winner Hit The Bid.

Last Call (Lot 84) is closely related to Thyestes Chase and Munster National winner Total Recall, while She’ll Go Phar (Lot 89) is a Walk In The Park half-sister to Grade 1 chaser Changing Times.

Yearlings catalogued include a Havana Grey colt out of the Group 3-placed Kodiac mare Barroche, as well yearlings by Ardad, Arizona, Maxios, Waldgeist and Vadamos.

Trainers with lots catalogued include Alan King, David O’Meara, Ed Bethell, Ed Walker, George Boughey, Jessica Harrington, Joseph O’Brien, Marco Botti, Ralph Beckett, Rebecca Menzies, Richard Hughes and Sheila Lavery. Among the 66 horses in and out of training is the Karl Burke-trained Northern Ruler, who earned a rating of 93 after impressing in a mile-and-a-half novice stakes at Newcastle in January.
