KEEPING horse tack clean doesn’t have to be a time-consuming chore. Here are some Horse Sense hacks to make tack cleaning quicker, easier, and more effective.

Start with a damp microfibre cloths for quick wipe-downs after each ride (better for the planet than baby wipes). For deep cleaning, soak bits in warm water with a splash of apple cider vinegar - this cuts through grime and leaves them shiny without harsh chemicals.

Use a toothbrush or old mascara wand to scrub stitching and hard-to-reach crevices in bridles or saddles. For built-up grime, mix a paste of baking soda and water, apply with a toothbrush, and gently scrub. It’s effective and non-damaging to leather.

When cleaning leather, opt for glycerin-based saddle soap followed by a leather conditioner. If you’re out of conditioner, a small amount of olive oil or coconut oil can work, though use sparingly to avoid buildup.

Store tack in a dry, ventilated area and hang silica packets in your tack box to absorb moisture and prevent mould. Wrap bridles in old pillowcases to keep dust off and protect the leather.
