AS temperatures are rising again in Ireland, it’s vital to keep your dog cool and safe. Dogs can easily overheat, even on days that don’t feel scorching to us. Avoid walking during the hottest part of the day - early mornings or late evenings are best. Always check pavements with your hand; if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws.
Provide plenty of fresh water and shade, whether at home or out and about. Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes - it can be fatal. Some breeds, especially flat-faced ones like Pugs and Bulldogs, are more prone to heatstroke.
Consider cooling mats, damp towels, or dog-safe paddling pools. Watch for signs of heat stress: heavy panting, drooling, lethargy, or confusion. If in doubt, contact your vet immediately. A little care goes a long way in keeping your dog safe all summer.
