CLEANING an equine shower is essential for maintaining hygiene and preventing the spread of bacteria and fungi that can affect a horse’s health.

Begin by removing all loose hair, dirt and manure using a stiff brush or broom. Rinse the entire area with warm water to loosen grime from walls, floors and fixtures.

Use an equine-safe disinfectant to scrub all surfaces, including the floor, walls, and any equipment like cross-ties or hoses. Pay special attention to corners and drains, as these are common areas for mould and build-up.

Rubber mats

For the floor, use a squeegee or scrub brush with non-slip bristles to remove any soap scum or residue.

Rinse thoroughly to ensure no cleaning products remain, as some chemicals can irritate a horse’s skin or hooves. If your shower includes rubber mats, remove them if possible to clean underneath, then disinfect the mats separately.

Allow the space to dry completely by ensuring good ventilation, which helps prevent mildew. Cleaning should be done regularly, especially in high-use yards, to keep the area safe and comfortable for horses.

A clean equine shower not only promotes animal health, but also reflects a well-managed stable environment.

Hose cleaning

Cleaning the nozzle of an equine hose is a simple but important task, which is often forgotten. Cleaning the nozzle ensures proper water flow and maintains hygiene for your horse. Here’s the Horse Sense guide:

  • Detach the nozzle: turn off the water supply and unscrew the nozzle from the hose. If it’s stuck, use a cloth for better grip or pliers if necessary.
  • Soak in warm soapy water: fill a bucket with warm water and mild dish soap. Soak the nozzle for 10–15 minutes to loosen dirt, mineral deposits, and any organic matter.
  • Scrub the inside and outside: Use a small brush, like an old toothbrush or pipe cleaner, to scrub inside the nozzle openings and around any moving parts. Pay attention to the threads and where the water comes out, as these areas often collect debris.
  • Check for blockages: inspect the nozzle for clogs or build-up. If mineral deposits are present, soak it in a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water for an additional 15–20 minutes.
  • Rinse and dry: rinse thoroughly with clean water, shake off excess, and allow the nozzle to air-dry before reattaching it to the hose.
  • Regular cleaning helps prevent bacteria build-up and ensures efficient water pressure during use.
