UNIVERSITY of Limerick’s vibrant campus was overall winner of the Irish Education Award in 2023. The four-year BSc degree in Equine Science is perfect for students looking to pursue a career in the Equine Industry. The University also offers a two-year Certificate in Equine Science with the flexibility to progress to the Diploma in Equine Science and subsequently to the final year of the degree.
The programmes meet the educational requirement for Trained Farmer Status. There is an increased focus on equine content in second year with further specialisation in the third and fourth year, choosing either Business Management or Equitation options.
Students taking the Business Management option study New Enterprise Creation, Management and Growth, Strategic Management, and Business Consulting. Students completing the Equitation option are offered modules in The Young Horse, Equestrian Facilities, Performance Rider Development and Training, and Managing the Performance Horse. Students also undertake a paid eight-month work placement completed in an equine or equine-related enterprise domestically or internationally.
Equine Science undergraduate theses have consistently been selected as finalists at the British Equestrian Trade Association ‘Thesis of the Year Competition’ and have been shortlisted into the top highly commended studies by the British Society of Animal Science.
The careers prospects from the course are endless with students tailoring their learning to their own interests.
