TWO Irish riders finished in the top four of the 1.60m four-star Grand Prix in Wiesbaden, Germany, on Monday afternoon. Tipperary’s Max Wachman slotted into third place with his grandmother Susan Magnier’s Kilkenny, just ahead of his mentor Cian O’Connor in fourth place with Tipperary, also owned by Magnier.

The pair were among 11 clears in the first round, while Tom Wachman missed out when picking up a single time fault with Rock of Cashel to finish 12th.

O’Connor produced a clear in 43.84 seconds with the nine-year-old Arko III-sired gelding that Magnier purchased from Bertram Allen earlier this year.

Wachman then went one better when breaking the beam in 43.64 seconds to earn €15,000 with the Ita Brennan-bred 11-year-old gelding Kilkenny (VDL Cardento x Guidam) who went to the Tokyo Olympic Games and jumped double clear in the 2022 Aga Khan under O’Connor.

Victory in the class went to The Netherlands’ Marc Houtzager with Sterrehof’s Dante N.O.P (0/0 38.97), ahead of Germany’s Hans-Dieter Dreher in second with Cous Cous 3 (0/0 39.01).

Not to be outdone by her older brothers in recent weeks, 15-year-old Alice Wachman won two one-star classes on the opening day of the show.

She began by winning the 1.25m Table A with Thijssen SR Z when fastest of 16 clear rounds in 65.12 seconds, ahead of Germany’s Leonie Krief with Indigo.

She then went on to win the 1.35m Table A with the experienced 17-year-old gelding Atlantic du Seigneur when almost three seconds faster than Krieg who once again had to settle for the runner-up spot.
