THERE were two contrasting northern-bred winners last Friday.

On heavy ground at Wetherby, the Danny Doran-bred Foillan recorded his second win from eight starts when landing the three-mile handicap hurdle in the hands of Charlie Hammond.

The seven-year-old Le Fou gelding is trained for the Hold My Beer Syndicate by Richard Newland who gave £20,000 for the bay at Goffs UK’s 2020 September horses-in-training sale.

Danny had sold Foillan for €5,500 as a foal at Goffs’ 2015 December National Hunt Sale at Kildare Paddocks to Gleadhill House Stud and, in the care of Ian Williams, the gelding had one run in a bumper at Warwick in January 2020 in the colours of the late Trevor Hemmings.

Foillan is the first of four foals out of the unraced Milan mare Castlevennon who is a half-sister to two winners by Oscar: Bold Optimist and Bold Conquest.

This trio are out of another unraced mare in Massappeal Supreme (by Supreme Leader) who comes from the family of the multiple blacktype performers Mass Appeal and Commercial Artist and the Badminton horse trials winner Moonfleet (aka Empty Wagon).

Foillan was followed by colts in 2017 and 2019 by Sageburg and Diamond Boy respectively and a 2020 filly by Elusive Pimpernel.

Also on Friday, but on the Polytrack at Deauville, the Mayson gelding Tallinski won a six-and-a-half-furlong handicap for Belgian trainer Sofie Lanslots.

The eight-year-old, who started his career in England with Brian Ellison for whom he won twice and was placed on multiple occasions, joined Lanslots’ yard late in 2018 and has also now won twice for her and been placed many times over sprint distances.

Tallinski, who was bred at the Meadowlands Stud by Colin Kennedy, is the first of six foals out of the five-time winner Estonia (by Exceed And Excel) and is thus a half-brother to the winners Rock Of Estonia (by Society Rock), Baltic State (by Dandy Man) and Kimngrace (by Profitable).
