Following on from the death of the Max Ervine-bred Wichita in Australia last month, came the sad news on Saturday that The New One had died suddenly following a bout of colic. The 2008 King’s Theatre gelding, who was bred in Bessbrook by Richard Brown out of the Turgeon mare Thuringe, won half of his 40 starts and was placed nine times for earnings of over £1 million. Trained by Nigel Twiston Davies, whose son Sam was usually in the saddle, The New One won the Champion Hurdle Trial at Haydock on four occasions and three runnings of the International Hurdle. A good-looking bay, he was always beautifully turned-out. He last ran in early December 2018 \ Healy Racing
