Late entries for Goffs sales

THERE are 39 supplementary entries for next week’s Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale and 22 late entries for Tuesday’s Goffs Autumn Horses In Training Sale which precedes the yearling sale on Wednesday and Thursday. Some 21 of the additional yearlings are eligible for the Goffs Two Million Series. A preview of both sales can be found on page 51.

Pinhooking talk on Monday

THE ITBA Next Generation is hosting a talk on pinhooking at Goffs on Monday evening at 6pm. The panel consists of Alice Kavanagh (AK Thoroughbreds), Paul McCartan (Ballyphilip Stud), Philipp Graf Stauffenberg (Stauffenberg Bloodstock) and vet Tom O’Brien of Sycamore Lodge Equine Hospital. Jane Mangan will MC the event. Attendance is free but advance registration on Eventbrite is essential. Refreshments available from 5.30pm.

Sapphire Sale catalogue out

TATTERSALLS Ireland has compiled a catalogue of 224 lots for the Sapphire Sale which takes place on Friday, November 17th. The relatively new sale is dedicated to flat yearlings, foals and mares. A total of 80 lots catalogued are eligible for the €250,000 Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Stakes at the Curragh next year. There are 127 foals on offer.

Free admission for flat finale

THE final turf meeting of the flat season at the Curragh on Sunday, November 5th, will have free admission. Starting at 12.10pm, the eight-race card will feature the Group 3 Comer Group International Loughbrown Stakes, the €50,000 Tote Athgarvan Premier Handicap and the Listed Racing TV Finale Stakes. Ger O’Neill’s Capital Stud in Bennettsbridge will sponsor the two-year-old maiden, naming it after Castle Star who will stand at Capital Stud next season. Presentations to the leading owner, trainer, jockey and apprentice jockey of 2023 will be made during the afternoon.

Newbury races moved to Newmarket

THE Group 3 Horris Hill Stakes and Group 3 St Simon Stakes have been rescheduled following the abandonment of today’s fixture at Newbury. Both races will now take place at Newmarket. The St Simon Stakes will take place next Friday and the Horris Hill Stakes on Saturday. Original entries for both races have been cancelled and entries for these replacement races will close at noon on Tuesday.

Chaldean retired to Banstead

THIS year’s 2000 Guineas winner Chaldean will stand alongside his sire Frankel at Juddmonte’s Banstead Manor Stud next season. Bred at Whitsbury Manor Stud and trained by Andrew Balding, Chaldean won the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes, the Group 2 Champagne Stakes and the Group 3 Acomb Stakes as a juvenile. He is one of only 18 horses since 1874 to complete the Dewhurst-Guineas double.

Preparing your mare for breeding

THE ITBA hosts its annual autumn/winter veterinary seminar on Tuesday week, November 7th at 7pm at its offices in Kill, Co Kildare. The event can also be viewed online. This year’s topic is ‘Preparing you mare for the breeding season’ and will features speakers Dr Barbara Murphy (UCD/Equilume) and Dr Bena Hickey (Anglesey Lodge Equine Hospital). The Irish Equine Centre will also be represented on the night. The course is approved for 2 CVE credits with the Veterinary Council of Ireland. Registration is required. Erevann joins Aga Khan roster

THE Aga Khan Studs have announced the retirement of Erevann, the Group 2-winning and Group 1 placed son of Dubawi. Erevann will stand alongside Siyouni, Zarak, and fellow new recruit Vadeni at Haras de Bonneval for 2024. Winner of four races at two and three years old, including the Group 2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein and Group 3 Prix Paul de Moussac, and just a neck away from victory in the Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois, Erevann is out of the triple Group 1 winner Ervedya, a classic winner for her sire Siyouni.

Derby winner put down

LAST year’s Epsom Derby winner Desert Crown was humanely put to sleep on Monday following an unrecoverable injury sustained on the gallops in August. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, the son of Nathaniel won his only start at two and was also unbeaten at three, winning the Dante before the Derby. He finished second to Hukum in May but, while being prepared for the Juddmonte International at York, he fractured his off-fore fetlock.
