CITY Of Troy is set to lead Aidan O’Brien’s challenge into next week’s Sky Bet Ebor Festival at York, with the brilliant Derby winner reported to be in good shape ahead of his tilt at the Juddmonte International Stakes on Wednesday.
The Coolmore partners’ triple Group 1 winner had to get down and dirty when landing the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown last month, not at his most visually impressive on soft ground.
However, the form of that first win against his elders has received two boosts in recent weeks. Runner-up, Al Riffa, ran out a dominant, five-length winner of the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Berlin last weekend for Joseph O’Brien, while the fourth-placed See The Fire was beaten just a neck in second behind Opera Singer in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
City Of Troy is no bigger than 4/5 at the head of ante-post markets for next week’s £1.25 million contest. France’s runaway King Edward VII Stakes winner Calandagan is next in the listings at 7/1, with recent Group 2 winner Alflaila at 8/1 alongside Derby runner-up Ambiente Friendly at the same price.
White Birch was ruled out of the race on Friday as connections instead plot a path towards the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes.
O’Brien told The Irish Field: “Everything has been good with City Of Troy since Sandown. All has gone well with him. The Juddmonte International is always a very competitive race every year and we’re looking forward to it with him next week.”
Irish Derby winner Los Angeles has been supplemented for Wednesday’s Group 2 Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes, a race where the Ballydoyle handler is responsible for five of the remaining nine entries.
O’Brien said: “We haven’t really decided what we’re doing for definite with Los Angeles at the moment. We had to supplement him to have the option of thinking about running him, so we’ll see what happens.”
The champion trainer also indicated that Irish Oaks runner-up Content and Ribblesdale Stakes heroine Port Fairy are his intended runners in Thursday’s Group 1 Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks.
