HORSE Sport Ireland (HSI) has awarded €5,000 of Breeding Grant funding to the Northern Ireland Horse Board (NIHB).

The grant will be divided, with €3,000 awarded for a Mares Showjumping Development Project and €2,000 awarded to the NI Horse Board Young Performance Showjumping Challenge. Both competitions will take place Sunday, July 16th 2023 at The Meadows Equestrian Centre,

The Mares Showjumping Development Project aims to increase the number of high-quality mares available for breeding in Northern Ireland. The project will provide a platform to mare owners, with the goal of improving mare selection and breeding decisions, based upon show jumping performance, with classes also acting as building blocks for mares to achieve their Sport Horse Performance merits. This will ultimately lead to an increase in the quality of showjumpers in Northern Ireland, benefitting both breeders and riders.

On offer will be €1,000 in prize money, with €750 of this going to owners and €250 making up breeder prizes. The classes on offer will range from 1m to 1.20m and it is open to all DAFM-approved studbook mares.

Performance show jumping

The NI Horse Board Young Performance Showjumping Challenge will provide a platform for showcasing the best young horses in Northern Ireland. The competition will focus on horses between the ages of four and eight, with a view of continuing into careers in either show jumping and eventing.

Classes in this arena will range from 90cm for four-year-old horses, 1m for five and six-year-olds and 1.10m for seven and eight-year-olds. €650 will be on offer in each of the classes, this will be divided between owners and breeders.

“Both projects align with our goal of promoting and developing the breeding and performance of Irish horses. We look forward to seeing the positive impact that these initiatives will have on the equestrian community in Northern Ireland,” he added.
