JUST 57% of lots offered at Tuesday's one-day Goffs January Sale at Doncaster were sold but that statistic does not include talented young chaser Peaky Boy who was sold privately for "an undisclosed six-figure sum" having been led out unsold at £195,000.
Trained by Nicky Henderson for owner Oliver Harris, the seven-year-old son of Kayf Tara made a winning chase debut at Cheltenham in November off a mark of 132 before placing third at the same track in December off 139. He now joins the stable of Jonjo and A.J. O'Neill.
Peaky Boy's former connections also sold the mare Break My Soul for £70,000 to Co Meath trainer Ian Donoghue. Just two years ago the daughter of Doyen was sold for £290,000 after winning her point-to-point for Denis Murphy. She was consistent in eight starts for Henderson, winning twice, placing five times and finishing fourth once.
The horses-in-training session saw Paul and Ellmarie Holden's Coolmeen Farms offer nine lots with their five-year-old Johnny’s Jury selling for £75,000.
A son of Jukebox Jury and a half-brother to the multiple Grade 1 winner Appreciate it, he was trained by Nicky Henderson when he placed third on his hurdle debut just prior to the sale and was purchased by Tom Malone and Jamie Snowden.
The sale also offered a selection of NH breeding stock and weanlings and the mares were topped by Baroda Stud’s Misty Whisky. Offered on behalf of Distillery Stud, the listed-winning mare was offered in foal to Golden Horn and was purchased by Ashfield House for £60,000.
The sale’s NH weanling session was topped by Cobhall Court Stud’s Kapgarde colt. Out of Morena Du Berlais who is a half-sister to the Grade 1 winner Nirvana Du Berlais, he sold to J.P. McGrath Bloodstock for £30,000.
Other active Irish purchasers on the day included The Beeches Stud, J.D. Moore, Kieran Cotter, Lakefield Farm, Gary McGill, Rachel O'Neill and Philip Rothwell.
Goffs UK managing director Tim Kent said: "The trade for the NH mares and foals followed trade at similar sales towards the end of last year. Whilst we were hopeful of sustained demand for this category, there is no denying that trade was selective and it was tough for some breeders.
"Whilst we can all celebrate the high prices, we recognise the challenging nature of the NH market away from the headlines and how tough it can be if you don’t have exactly what the market wants.
"The Goffs team worked tirelessly to draw buyers from throughout Europe and as ever, our commitment to UK breeders remains steadfast.
"We will continue to do everything in our power to create the most vibrant market for every horse sent to us and we will be visiting many breeders over the coming weeks as we look ahead to the Spring Sale in May."
