THE CoilÓg Equestrian Centre in Co Kildare was the venue for Sunday’s Mackey Equestrian/Irish Pony Club Show Jumping Classic where two training bursaries at McKee Barracks were the tempting prizes in the 1.20m Classic Final.

No one managed to go clear over the Chris Byrne-built track with the first six in the placings all lowering one fence apiece.

The fastest four-fault rounds were recorded by Longford’s Katie Duignan on her father Gavin’s Aboy Duggie (80.42secs) and North Tipperary and Ormond’s Katie Doughan riding Star Of Apollo (84.29).

This was a second win on the day for Duignan and Aboy Duggie, a seven-year-old gelding by Garryduff Jar of Hearts on whom the 17-year-old had landed the preceding 1.10m Classic Finder.

Last month, Duignan partnered the grey Irish Sport Horse to finish fourth in the Young Riders 1.10m to 1.15m National Championship at the Dublin Horse Show.

There was a jump-off to the Classic Finder in which Duignan and Aboy Duggie again went clear, stopping the clock on 53.25 seconds with Meath’s Grace Hanna having to settle for second (clear in 54.08) on Jennifer Kelly’s Mullentine Sure Diamond, an 18-year-old mare on whom she competes under Showjumping Ireland rules.

Hanna also rode the 158cms chesnut at Dublin but in the Intermediate working hunter pony class where they finished seventh.

The previous weekend, Hanna was on the Meaths’ winning Intermediate team with Kelly’s Clerkson at the IPC’s National Eventing Championships in Tattersalls Ireland.

With the only clear round, Kildare’s Phonsie Wardell won the 1m Classic Starter on his mother Sarah’s Connemara gelding Oxview Jasper, an eight-year-old grey by Tempo Active Atlas. In the 90cms Classic, there was a comprehensive victory for Araglen’s Patrick Leddy on his father Liam’s seven-year-old dun mare Glenara Tiger Roll.

The Treo Eile-sponsored award for the rider on the highest-placed thoroughbred went to Laois member Rachel Foley, riding the 12-year-old Milan mare Allez Amour.

“We had a very good day,” said Helen O’Neill, chair of the IPC’s show jumping committee.

“As one of the qualifiers was cancelled at the last minute, we held a qualifier on Sunday morning and that was well contested by members from throughout the country, from East Donegal down to Araglen. To keep other family members happy, we also ran classes throughout the day from x-poles to 80cms.”
