ELAINE Heney, Ireland’s leading equestrian author, has triumphed at the 2024 Equus Film and Arts Festival in the USA, winning three top literary awards for her equestrian books.

Heney’s 151 Polework Exercises for Horses claimed ‘Best International Horse Training Book’. The book has become a go-to resource for horse riders worldwide, offering a wide range of exercises to help build strength, flexibility, coordination, and partnership between horses and their riders.

Her modern-day retelling of the classic Black Beauty, The Galway Connemara, won ‘Best International Young Adult Book’, for readers age 11 up. The novel tells the story of a Connemara pony called Lir, who tells his story in his own words, offering a fresh perspective and a heart-warming Irish twist on the beloved classic.

Heney also took home ‘Best International Children’s Book’ for Granny’s Got a Secret, a charming kids’ bedtime story book about Paddy the Pony, who is trying to figure out exactly what Granny is up to.

Gratitude

In response to the recognition, Heney expressed her gratitude, saying: “I am absolutely thrilled and honoured to receive these three incredible awards. I’m deeply grateful to all my readers, and to everyone who has supported my journey.

“I hope these books will help people to look at life from their horse’s perspective and add to the many voices calling for higher welfare standards for horses in competitive sports.”

The Equus Film and Arts Festival, held annually in the USA, is renowned for honouring the finest in equestrian literature, film and arts, and this year’s awards were a testament to Heney’s growing influence and her dedication to the equestrian community.

Heney’s winning books have garnered praise for their ability to inspire and educate, offering valuable insights for horse owners and riders of all ages and skill levels. Her success at the Equus Film and Arts Festival is a testament to the powerful storytelling and horsemanship principals she brings to the world of equestrian literature.
