WHILE Goodwood dominated the racing coverage last week I thought I’d check in with the action the other side of the Irish Sea and dust off our Lengths Gained Jumping metric, writes Page Fuller.

It was the Galway Plate on Wednesday, and the data suggests the second horse was a little unlucky.

The winner, Pinkerton, travelled smoothly through the race, and got into a beautiful jumping rhythm gaining +8.41 lengths from his jumping compared to the rest of the field.

Duffle Coat, however, failed to find his rhythm or gain any real advantage through his jumping.

He only gained +0.7 lengths through the whole race from his jumping and that proved crucial in the end. He tried to race handy but always found it difficult to hold his position, having to make the most of a handy seam up the inside into the home straight.

He did well to make up the ground he did on Pinkerton considering how much of a disadvantage his jumping had been and completed the final two furlongs 0.61 seconds quicker than him.

He won over a furlong further earlier this summer, so I expect to see further improvement once he steps back up to three miles.
