NAVAN is the only show in town this weekend when it comes to Irish racing’s calm before the Punchestown storm.
There is plenty to look forward to on the Co Meath track’s SBK Vintage Crop Stakes card today, including the return of top-class stayer Kyprios, and the Group 3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Salsabil Stakes (2.52) has been upgraded from listed status since last year.
Paddy Twomey’s unbeaten Purple Lily tries 10 furlongs for the first time in that fillies-only event, having indicated last week that he believes she will stay this distance despite being untried at it.
She looks a genuine Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas contender on the promise of her first two wins.
“Purple Lily is in great form,” said Twomey. “She won well on her first start of the season at Naas and has been training well since. We’re looking forward to this.”
Noel Meade is also looking forward to stepping up in distance with last season’s Group 3 Weld Park Stakes winner Caught U Looking.
“The way she’s bred, we thought it was better to go this direction,” said Meade.
“She’s by Harzand and out of a Mastercraftsman mare. I’m happy with her. She’s ready to run.”
Others in the mix include smart maiden winners Everlasting, Wingspan (both trained by Aidan O’Brien), Bellezza (Ger Lyons) and Ezeliya (Dermot Weld).
