THE early awaited weights for the 2024 Randox Grand National were released in Liverpool today with the King George Chase winner Hewick topping the lists.

A total of 87 entries go forward with 56 (64%) of them Irish-trained.

Battleoverdoyen, Fakiera, Its On The Line, Placenet, Royal Thief and So Des Flos were not qualified.

With a reduced permitted field of 34 for 2024, Martin Greenwood, the British Horseracing Authority’s Chase Handicapper, has hailed this year’s list of Randox Grand National entries as “strong on quality”.

Now in his sixth year of framing the weights for the world’s greatest steeplechase, Greenwood believes that horses will require a rating of 145 to get a run on Saturday, April 13th.

Betting partner William Hill make Vanillier is the 12/1 favourite. The 2023 runner-up, who will run off 10st 8lbs, heads the betting from a host of contenders at 14/1, including last year’s winner, Corach Rambler (11st 2lbs), and Panda Boy who has been cut from 16/1 after being given 10st 3lbs.

Champion trainer Willie Mullins, said it would be an “honour” to win the Randox Grand National for a second time – 19 years after winning the race with Hedgehunter.

Asked if he will be giving some of his National entries a run at Cheltenham next month, he said: “We very possibly will. Once we get a look at the weights in more detail then we’ll be firming up plans for the National.

Capodanno, I Am Maximus, Janidil, Asterion Forlonge, Stattler and Classic Getaway, James Du Berlais and Bronn top his 13 entries, all guaranteed a run.

“There are some very interesting looking ratings there and we’d love to have horses with real chances for the race.

“It would be an honour to have another winner of the Grand National on our CV, but we’ve already been very lucky to have won it once and been placed a couple of times.

“It’s a world-renowned race and always a great day out for anyone with a runner in it - it’s the day that Liverpool is on the world map.”

Assessing the chances of his highest-rated horses, Mullins said: “They’re all weights that they have a chance at.” He also picked out Mr Incredible, who ran in the Grand National last year and has not been seen on a racecourse since unseating at the 24th of the 30 fences, as an interesting contender, adding: “He’s one who could come back this year. I’m very happy with his work at home.”

Shark Hanlon admits Hewick "probably deserves" top weight

The nine-year-old is bidding to become the first horse for 90 years – since Golden Miller in 1934 - to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National in the same season.

Hanlon said: “I knew he’d have top weight. You have to expect that. He probably deserves top weight.

“I think the trip will suit him. He’s going for the Gold Cup first and please God he comes out of the Gold Cup safe and if he does he’ll definitely head there (to Aintree).

“It’s a mighty day. It’s one of those days you look forward all year to. The National, the Gold Cup and the King George at Kempton – they’re the three big days in England aren’t they, so it’s great to have a runner there.”

While Hanlon is still pinching himself he insists Hewick has always been targeted at the Grand National. He continued: “We always said that he’d be a National horse and there’s a month between the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the National this year so I think it’s a big opportunity for him.

“The most important thing is that he gets good ground. With fewer runners in the race this year there won’t be quite as much weight between us and the horses at the bottom. In previous years the difference could be a fair bit more and we’d be giving more away.

“He won the Galway Plate off nearly top weight, he won the bet365 (Oaksey Chase at Sandown Park) off a big weight. It’s not that he’s not used to carrying top weight and he carries it very well.

“All is great with him and he couldn’t be better. I’m very, very happy with him.”
