Expanded is likely to be the sole Aidan O'Brien representative in next Saturday's Betfred 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

It had been expected that Twain would be the stable's number one runner in the classic but on Tuesday morning Coolmore and Ballydoyle announced that Twain was a doubtful runner.

In a social media post, Coolmore said: "Following his work this morning, Twain (Wootton Bassett) didn’t scope 100% so is unlikely to run in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and may now be aimed at the Irish 2000 Guineas instead. Expanded (Wootton Bassett) is likely to be Ballydoyle's only runner in the 2000 Guineas on Saturday."

Expanded only ran twice as a juvenile, both starts coming within eight days. He won a Curragh maiden by a neck on October and a week later he was pitched into the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes and was only beaten by a neck by European champion two-year-old Shadow Of Light.

Some observers felt Expanded was unlucky to be beaten as, not only was he the most inexperienced runner in the field, he also raced on a different part of the track than the winner.

The two colts now look likely to have a rematch on Saturday but neither is favourite to win. That mantle is held by the John and Thady Gosden-trained Field Of Gold, a son of Kingman who was a very impressive winner of the Craven Stakes at Newmarket two weeks ago.
