THE renowned Tradesman’s Handicap Meeting took place in Hawick on Friday and Saturday last. It turned out to be a historic trip for Kian McNally as he became the first Irish jockey to win the Tradesman’s. The Irish Champion Miler Honest Bernie was prominent all the way before setting sail two furlongs down.

The issue was settled in a matter of strides as Honest Bernie ran out a most impressive winner. Owned by Teddy Worrell and Hanna Heffernan the winner returned to a rapturous Cheltenham like reception with Kian holding the tricolour aloft.

For good measure Kian completed a double on Oh No who made all the running for the Worrell/Crabbe Syndicate.

Twenty four hours later Honest Bernie and Kian were back in the winner’s enclosure after completing a famous double in the mile race. For good measure the Armagh maestro landed Saturday’s feature the Buccleugh Handicap on Meet Me At The Bar.

Shane Crabbe’s winner came home late and fast under another hugely confident ride from the student of St Patrick’s Grammar School.

The Irish domination of the meeting continued when Dylan O’Connor took Saturday’s opener for David Irvine’s One More Time. It was also a meeting to savour for Mick and Kathy Flannery as they combined with Kerry jockey John Mulvihill for a treble.

Hard To Get Him was the second dual winner of the meeting while Mick Mac Mania produced a top class performance on Friday afternoon.
