What They Said: The 2023 season from the winners

January

“Hooker Berry – Bazire always has them ready for the big day.” Oisin Quill was the only one of five top drivers to pick the winner of the Prix d’ Amerique in Paris.

February

“The atmosphere was great – a bit like The Little Brown Jug in Ohio. The standard of horses was very high.” Vincennes made a good impression with 81-year-old Jimmy Reilly from Finglas.

March

“She can be temperamental – hopefully Lawrence can keep her relaxed.” Trainer’s father, Walter Stewart, sums up Sweet Caroline. The mare reeled off eight wins.

April

“Her only bad habit is an eating habit, she is a really good doer,” Jim Galway on Forever At It. The feeding was worth it as she won two and had several placed efforts.

May

“The first day she raced she reared up and smashed up a €2,000 sulky,” Finbar Quill got off to a bad start with Fina Mix. All is forgiven as the mare won five races in 2023.

June

“The service fees from the Invest In Ourselves series have helped to fund this meeting, so thanks go to Bill Donovan, Casie Coleman and Eric Cherry.” Mark Flanagan, chairman IHRA thanks his American backers.

July

“I might make a comeback in driving in a few years when her offspring arrive,” sounds like 80-year-old John Boyle will be racing long after Supreme Sunshine has retired.

August

“It strikes me that love, as with so many sports which flourish below the mainstream radar, really is the main motor driving all this,” the Red John Memorial makes Hold The Back Page by Eamonn Sweeney in the Sunday Independent.

September

“It’s great to see a mare bred in Ireland beating the French imports. Full marks to my sister Mary who sticks at it, when most people, including myself, would give up,’’ Sean Kane admires Mary’s patience with Hot To Trot.

October

“Dan bought him when he met the owner coming through the airport,” Jim M Ateer thinks his son, Dan, should join the frequent flyer scheme after Louis Vuitton wins impressively.

November

“I don’t set out to win leading driver,” winner John Richardson makes out that the drivers’ championship is no big deal.

“He’s still the best,” runner-up Jonny Cowden makes out that the drivers’ championship is no big deal.

December

“My instructions were ‘get out of the gate and then get cover’. I managed to get a lead and when my horse saw daylight he flew home,” Eoin Murphy explains his win in Normandy.
