MUTASARREF registered the 10th win of his career when landing the featured Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Navigation Stakes at Cork on Tuesday.

Sent off 5/4 favourite, the Colin Keane-ridden gelding stayed on strongly to beat Dublin by a length.

Trainer Ger Lyons said: “This is Eleanora’s (Kennedy, owner) last hurrah for the season as she heads back to the States this week, so goes out with a winner.

“She has had a lovely summer and Mutasarref has been a star. Today was for Eleanora, as she asked me to have one ready before October 5th. Hopefully, he isn’t finished for the year, but it depends on the ground as he doesn’t want heavy.”

Tom McCourt scooped a valuable pot as Smoke Them Out enjoyed a 7/1 success under Robert Whearty in the Irish EBF Auction Series Nursery Handicap.

Owned by Mrs Pauline McCourt and Stephen Sweeney, the colt went clear inside the final furlong to win by one and three-quarter lengths. McCourt reported: “He was bought for €4,000 in Goffs (September 2023) and, from day one, was always lovely.

Birdcatcher bound

“If the ground stays reasonable, he’ll run in the Birdcatcher and, while he gallops like a horse who would appreciate a dig, I’m not sure if he is strong enough to handle it yet.”

Likedbymike kept on well under Billy Lee to win the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden. Sent off 13/2, the Michael Byrne-trained filly coasted to an impressive four-and-a-quarter length success for owner Mrs Michael J Byrne.

The winning trainer said: “That was very good and she improved with every run. Over five (furlongs), she is very quick and we were hoping today’s easy five would suit and it did.

“She has a lot of pace, but we couldn’t get her into a breeze-up (sale) although she was the best breeze-up horse we had. There you are, she showed it today and she will definitely be for sale.”

Susie bound for listed company

ANDREW Slattery landed the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap with 5/2 chance Staysound Susie. Carrying the colours of the Dreamers and Believers Syndicate, the filly stayed on well under Andrew Slattery Junior to beat Tai Tam Bay by two and three-quarter lengths.

Slattery Senior reported: “She didn’t stay seven (furlongs) in Galway, so we gave her a break and is only back five weeks. We’ll see what’s left for her now and I’d like to find a listed race for her.

She likes soft ground and Andrew thinks she is improving. She is owned by a great bunch of four lads from Fethard, who also bred her. Donal Tobin, Liam Sweeney, Willie Leahy, who isn’t here, and Richie Nevin, whose father trained Belsir to win the (1987) Galway Hurdle.”

Forrest keeps on running

Run Forrest Run recorded back-to-back wins in the Mallow Handicap for owner/trainer Micky Fenton. A winner 12 months ago, the 9/1 chance beat Green Valentine by half a length.

Fenton later said: “It looks like the blinkers worked and Darragh (O’Sullivan) is a good, up-and-coming jockey, so we were lucky to get him with his 7lb claim.

“A few of the boys, Seamie Heffernan and Leigh Roche, who rode him on his last few runs said he wasn’t trying very hard and to try the blinkers, so they were spot on.”

McMonagle takes the quick way

DYLAN Browne McMonagle made all on the Joseph O’Brien-trained Wemightakedlongway to win the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden. Sent off 2/1, the E S Racing-owned filly kept on well to beat favourite Minnie Hauk by two and a half lengths.

McMonagle said: “She is a beauty, she is a big girl and has improved plenty from her first run. It was very straightforward, she jumped, travelled and was still green in front, but there is plenty of talent there and she will only get better.

“Declan (McDonogh) rode her the first day when they got smashed coming out of the stalls and got back in the field, but she did finish off really good. She has come forward from that and will only get better with time.”

Hidden Gem

Gerrit’s Gem led close home under Ronan Whelan to win the Follow Us On Social Media Handicap by a neck.

Owner Gerrit O’Reilly later said of his 11/1 winner: “We stepped him up to a mile, as his mother had finished third on her debut over today’s course-and-distance. He had won over six (furlongs) here earlier in the year and we took the blinkers off today to help him to settle.

“It was a great ride from Ronan and we have his proper trip now. I help out Kieran (Cotter - winning trainer) and we’ll go back now and make a plan; if there’s another race, we might chance him but if not, he has won two this year so we are happy enough.”

Dermot Weld and Chris Hayes won the concluding Follow Us On Twitter Handicap with Alessia Fernanda. Sent off 6/1, the Benjamin Curtin and Maurice Brew-owned filly got up to beat Warazam by three-quarters of a length.

Kris Weld reported: “She has had some good runs all summer and she tries hard every day.

“She was back a furlong in distance today and won nicely. To win with 10st 1lb always takes a bit of doing, no matter what the grade, and we’re delighted with her.”
