IRISH racing was shocked to learn of the sudden death of Paddy Dunican on Saturday. He was 61.
Manager of Kilbeggan Racecourse for over 35 years, he was named National Hunt Racecourse Manager of the Year three times and was deeply involved in the local community.
Paddy was an auctioneer and property valuer, and was a recipient of the Athlone Business Person of the Year Award in 2018.
He took over as Kilbeggan Racecourse manager in 1988 when the track had just three meetings a year. It now has 10 annual fixtures and has a reputation for attracting large attendances and race sponsors.
Paddy was also a very shrewd political operator and was ahead of his time in inviting TDs, Taoisigh and even Presidents to Kilbeggan on racedays. He was instrumental in securing Government grants for the racecourse and used his connections to raise racing matters in political circles.
