Legendary dual-purpose trainer David Elsworth has announced that he will not renew his license next year, and retires after 66 years in the sport.

“I don't think it's a big deal but I no longer have any horses and I won't be renewing my licence, so you can now definitely say I'm retiring,” Elsworth said.

Elsworth handled the careers of such stars over the jumps and flat as Gold Cup winner Desert Orchid, Grand National winner Rhyme 'N Reason, Champion Chase winner Barnbrook Again and the multiple winners Floyd and Heighlin.

On the flat his star performers were the most popular stayer Persian Punch, In The Groove, Rhyme 'N Reason and Arabian Queen.

"I'll see how the wind blows before deciding what to do next. My home is in Newmarket and I'm not planning to up sticks and move anywhere – I just won't be operating as a trainer," he told the Racing Post.
