Portrush PTP cancelled
TODAY’S Route Harriers point-to-point at Portrush in Co Antrim was cancelled on Friday morning following an inspection which found the course to be waterlogged and unfit for racing. News on a possible new date will be announced on Monday.
Navan races on Monday
LAST Saturday’s cancelled Navan meeting goes ahead on Monday with fresh declarations due today. The card features the Grade 3 Webster Cup Chase and the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Novice Handicap Chase Final.
Date set for Ronan McNally appeal to be heard
TRAINER Ronan McNally’s appeal against a 12-year ban, €50,000 in costs and an order to return to €13,000 in prize money will be held on Wednesday, April 19th.
Passing of Michael Carroll
FORMER trainer Michael Carroll from Cloughjordan, Co Tipperary, passed away on Thursday after a period of ill health. A popular figure in racing, his first job in the sport was with Vincent O’Brien in Ballydoyle. He also worked for Fred Winter.
As a trainer, his best horse was Drive On Jimmy who won over hurdles and fences in the early 1980s. In more recent years Carroll assisted local trainers including Charlie Swan, Tom Hogan and Denis Hogan.
Reposing this evening (Saturday) at Sullivans Funeral Home in Borrisokane from 5pm to 8pm. His funeral mass is at 1pm on Sunday in St Patrick’s Church, The Pike, Ballingarry.
Grassland management advice at ITBA webinar
THE Irish Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association will hold an online grassland management seminar next Wednesday (March 22nd) at 7pm. Speakers include Alan Creighton, head of environment and nutrition at the Irish Equine Centre, and Shane Browne, agricultural scientist for the Irish Equine Centre and Department of Agriculture farm advisor. Topics under discussion include grassland management, soil analysis and equine nutrition.
