KEVIN Prendergast has placed his Friarstown Stables on the market.

Recently turned 91, Prendergast has held a trainer’s licence since 1963 and is still training winners from the 250-acre Curragh property which has housed numerous classic and Group 1 winners over the years.

Friarstown has over 70 boxes and its own seven-furlong sand and fibre gallop.

The guide price for the property is €7.5 million.

One of the most popular characters in Irish racing, Prendergast was born in Australia in 1932. Although educated in Ireland, he returned to Australia to begin his racing career before returning to work alongside his father, the legendary champion trainer Darkie Prendergast.

He worked as assistant trainer to his father before taking out his own licence to train in 1963. He saddled his first classic winner in 1972 and has won eight Irish classics in total. His best horses have included Ardross, Conor Pass, Artique Royale, Northern Treasure, Oscar Schindler and Awtaad. His sole English classic success to date came when Nebbiolo won the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in 1977. He has trained well over 2,000 winners in Ireland.
