SPANISH Flame lit up Tipperary on Wednesday with a narrow but meaningful success in the Glenvale Stud Race, scoring for in-form jockey Gary Carroll, trainer Ger Lyons and owner Vincent Gaul.

A six-lengths winner previously at Roscommon, the sizeable Phoenix Of Spain-juvenile took a while to get organised in today’s home straight but finished well to see off newcomer Bremen by a neck, with a head for third-placed Chicago Fireball.

Shane Lyons, representing his brother, reported: “Ger absolutely loves this horse and we were delighted to be able to come here on ground which is on the easy side of good. He is only learning, didn’t handle Roscommon whatsoever and probably didn’t handle here.

“He is still raw and green but it is a great stepping stone for the Tyros (Stakes). He is a fabulous horse and is over 500 kilos - I’m sure we’ve had ones that size before but they were never any good!”

He added: “Gary’s comments were that if the winning post was a little further away, he’d have won by five lengths. He is exciting and it is all about next year.”

Wide margin

Widest margin winner was seven-lengths victor Miss Yvonne (11/2) in the @Tipperaryraces Handicap, as the Jessica Harrington-trained filly made all under jockey Shane Foley.

Kate Harrington, representing her mother, said: “She had been knocking on the door on her last two runs and got her act together and has run right to the line there.

“She is in the July Sale and goes there off the back of a very good win. I’ll be sad to see her go but she is a nice filly who will win plenty races for the right connections. She is owned by Robert Lanigan and John Magnier, is definitely progressive.”

Corballis with a shock for Cotter

THE feature race was the Listed Coolmore Ten Sovereigns Tipperary Stakes, which was won by 25/1 outsider Son Of Corballis for trainer Kieran Cotter, owners Knobel McGrath Partnership and jockey Declan McDonogh.

A debut winner at today’s venue in April, the Raven’s Pass colt today improved on a disappointing Sandown run in May when making all to beat dead-heating runner-ups Alabama and Gaenari by a neck.

Cotter commented: “If he hadn’t run in Sandown he’d have been second favourite today. He didn’t travel over well to Sandown, got interfered at the start and dropped back to last. He was a bit sick when he came home but we gave him plenty time to recover and knew we had him 100% today.

“He is in the Weatherbys Super Sprint (July 22nd) with just 8st 10lb so that is a nice pot to be heading for after here, if he isn’t sold. He is a good tough horse and should have a good career ahead of him.”

A promising juvenile from last year Lady Tilbury got off the mark as a three-year-old in the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Race, when justifying 8/11 favouritism to win for jockey Ronan Whelan, owners MRC International and trainer David Marnane.

Marnane stated: “It was a call whether or not to run her back quick or not but I felt Ronan was right at the Curragh (three days previously) when he felt the ground was too quick for her.

“As a two-year-old she was hitting flat patches but is now doing the opposite and travelled too well to halfway the last day. She is in the Sapphire Stakes, I wanted to bring her here to see what she would be like at five (furlongs).

“I’d also love to see her run in England in a hard-run five (furlongs) sprint. She is doing fantastic, cost 18,000gns, is a three-year-old who has done a lot and is going to get better.”

Chestnutter has winning touch

THE Noel Meade-trained, No Rush Man Syndicate-owned Chestnutter was another to made all and score well, completing consecutive wins in the Racing Again Tomorrow (Fillies) Handicap.

The recent Leopardstown winner defeated Finsceal Go Deo by two and three-parts of a lengths and winning jockey Chris Hayes quipped: “I should have won a two-year-old maiden on her but got into more trouble than the early explorers around Leopardstown one day!”

He added: “I thought winning a maiden would be a formality but she then lost her way. Full credit to Noel for changing the riding tactics and taking off all the head gear.

“She’s in again (at Bellewstown) on Friday and I’ll be twisting his arm hoping she’ll run.”

Off the mark

Havana Notion (8/1) got trainer Johnny Feane off the mark for the season in the Botanica International Apprentice Handicap, winning for jockey Hugh Horgan and the Prosperous One Syndicate.

Feane said: “My horses have been running well, all hitting the board, so I’m happy with the way they’re running.

“He’s been a very frustrating horse, but he’s never beaten too far. I don’t think he liked Dundalk, but I kept running him there as he’s there as a fun horse. He’s a funny horse - he couldn’t pull him up again - but I’m glad he won. It was a good performance from the draw.”

Six-year-old mare No Hassle (3/1 favourite) gained a deserved first success in the TipperaryRaces.ie Handicap (Div I), scoring for trainer Shane Ryder, owners the Eyre Racing Partnership and for jockey Joey Sheridan.

Lightly-raced No Hassle had finished second on her two previous runs and today scored by a length and a half from Blackpoint.

Trainer Ryder said: “That was a long time in the making and she had been plagued by injuries. I thought after the handicapper hit her twice recently that her chance had gone.

“Thankfully she has improved nicely and with luck might continue to do so. She might have one run before going to Galway in September.

“It is extra special to win for the owners who are local to me and have been patient and loyal, so I’m grateful. I only have a handful of horses where I’m based so I do a lot of the work myself.”

Concluding race

The concluding race, and second division of the TipperaryRaces.ie Handicap, was won by a head by Belgoprince (17/2) for trainer Tony Martin, owners the Tohali Partnership and jockey Ben Coen.

Afterwards Coen reported: “He was good, I thought he’d run okay the last day over two miles but they went very slow over and it turned into a sprint.

“I got a nice run around today although he doesn’t do much when he hits the front. That’s as short as he wants, especially around here.”
