As expected, Auguste Rodin won Sunday's Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, thus becoming the 18th horse to complete the Epsom-Curragh Derby double.

In doing so, the Deep Impact colt also gave jockey Ryan Moore his first Irish Derby success, while for trainer Aidan O'Brien this was a 100th European classic victory.

Sent off the 4/11 favourite to defeat his eight rivals, Auguste Rodin raced in third during the early stages, tucked in behind stable companions Adelaide River and San Antonio.

There was drama on the home turn when San Antonio went lame and unseated his rider Wayne Lordan. The favourite could easily have been brought down had the stricken horse veered right instead of left.

However, Moore and Auguste Rodin avoided the incident and were soon on terms with Adelaide River. The result looked a formality but Adelaide River and Seamie Heffernan refused to lie down and it was only in the final half furlong that Auguste Rodin pulled clear to win by a length and a half.

Adelaide River (33/1) finished second, over two lengths ahead of another O'Brien-trained runner, Covent Garden (80/1). Peking Opera (66/1) completed a 1-2-3-4 for Ballydoyle.

"It wasn't a straightforward race. Unfortunately when Wayne's horse went wrong, my rhythm was broken," said Moore.

He added: "Aidan would tell you that it's about everyone else, and it is. It's a big team effort and obviously there are so many people that he always thanks.

"But there's a reason why he has these records and I'm very lucky to have ridden for him for as long as I have. He's put me on these horses who are capable of winning these sorts of races. I'm just very grateful to be working for him."
