12.10 Castle Star Irish EBF Maiden 1m

Autumn Winter caught the eye in finishing fifth to Guildenstern on his debut at Leopardstown and he may be able to get off the mark now. Aidan O’Brien’s Galileo colt was tapped for toe early over the seven furlongs but he came home well in tough conditions to be beaten by just two and a half lengths by the useful winner. Seamie Heffernan is riding Chantilly, which suggests he is the first string for Ballydoyle, but there may not have been much in it and Killian Hennessy’s 5lb claim is no bad thing on this heavy ground.

Kolachi was one place behind Chantilly when they were third and second to The Euphrates at Gowran, and Joseph O’Brien’s colt may be able to improve past that rival now. That was just his second start, and an improved effort from his first run, and he may well be able to step forward again. Fine Point ran well on debut when third to Ocean Of Dreams and could also be another to step forward to challenge here.

SELECTION: AUTUMN WINTER

Big Gossey can make it win number five at the Curragh. Charles O’Brien’s six-year-old might have only won once this season, but he has some really smart efforts in defeat, not least pushing the classy Go Athletico all the way over this course and distance. He may not have been at that level on his last three starts but the return to the Curragh is an obvious positive and, more significantly, this is a marked drop in class for him.

Yosemite Valley may give him most to do. He is at the other end of the spectrum, as a lightly raced three-year-old coming in here off the back of a maiden win. His win came over this course and distance and he did it smartly so he is respected. Verhoyen, another Curragh specialist, could run well again, with the return to six furlongs a plus for his trademark fast start.

SELECTION: BIG GOSSEY

In a wide open contest it might pay to take a chance on Expressova outrunning likely fancy odds. Sheila Lavery’s filly was a ready winner on her comeback in a fillies’ handicap at Cork, flying home late to collar the useful Coumshingaun. She was then highly tried in a listed race over six furlongs at this track, not disgracing herself when 10th of 16 to Aussie Girl. The step up to seven furlongs could well suit her and it’s semi-interesting that Robbie Colgan rides her in preference to Nituna, who has pretty solid claims on recent form.

You can put Blue Peak into the same bracket. He won over this course and distance earlier in the month and found only Merisi Diamond too good in a 20-runner handicap here on Tuesday. He can run well again.

As can Facethepuckout, despite a mark close to a career high. Michael O’Callaghan’s seven-year-old was a smart winner of a decent handicap at Naas previously, and he should get the fast pace he needs over the seven furlongs here.

SELECTION: EXPRESSOVA

Next best: Blue Peak

1.50 Cavalor Equine Nutrition Handicap 5f

Magical Vision might be worth chancing on the grounds that her most recent start was a blip. Her form prior to that is really strong as she put together a hat-trick of wins earlier in the season before being put away for an autumn campaign on the soft ground she needs.

She returned with a big effort when only a head second to Sunday Sovereign, which suggests she has more to offer off a 4lb higher rating of 76. Both Screen Siren and Stag Night were wide margin winners last time and have been penalised accordingly but, given the conditions were similar to what they’ll face here, you’d have to respect them. There may have been more depth to Stag Night’s Naas win and he is more lightly raced so gets the second vote.

SELECTION: MAGICAL VISION

2.25 Tote Athgarvan Handicap 1m

Flame Of Eire hasn’t won since reeling off a four-timer in the middle of last season but she has been running consistently and steadily progressively at listed level and she may be able to find the winning thread again back in handicap company. Andy Slattery’s filly probably produced a career-best when fifth, beaten two and a half lengths by Mutasarref at Leopardstown two weeks ago. She handles heavy ground well and shouldn’t be underestimated despite her big weight to carry.

Grey Leader will be a big danger for Joe Murphy. He has won three of his five career starts and revelled in heavy ground conditions at Gowran last time. John Feane’s Indigo Five also strikes as a potential improver, having fended off a 20-strong field over this course and distance on his previous run.

SELECTION: FLAME OF EIRE

3.00 Comer International Loughbrown Stakes (Group 3)

For the second year in a row, Falcon Eight was unlucky with his run in the Irish Cesarewitch but he can gain a little bit of compensation in this Group 3 contest over just shorter. Dermot Weld’s eight-year-old came from way back in the €600,000 marathon, and might well have won but for a tight bunch finish.

He can handle heavy ground and, while this could get tactical, he has the class to win for a seventh time.

Shanroe is right back to form for Karl Thornton after back-to-back wins, including one at listed level in Chester last time. He should run well again but this looks a step above what he faced recently. Jesse Evans needs to step up as well, but he might well do, off the back of another excellent season on the level and over hurdles. He travelled really well in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket, only giving way late in the day, and had previously run really well in behind Falcon Eight in the Irish equivalent. Echoes In Rain was well held in that same race so has a little bit to prove now.

SELECTION: FALCON EIGHT

Hans Anderson is an intriguing runner, making his first appearance since finishing eighth of nine in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains in May, but this might be a tough ask racing on heavy ground and presuming he is coming off some sort of setback.

Sunchart could get his turn. He bounced right back to form for Andy Slattery when closing right in on Boogie Woogie in a 10-furlong listed race at Leopardstown. A mile and a half on this sort of ground is fine for him and he has always maintained a decent level throughout his career.

Helvic Dream returned to winning ways here on Tuesday but that was a soft race and he has more on his plate here. The springer could be Feathertop, who completely dismantled a Gowran Park maiden when last seen, revelling in heavy ground conditions.

SELECTION: SUNCHART

Dermot Weld has unleashed a few nice juveniles late in this campaign and maybe Taymura can join them on the list of winners. She ran reasonably well first time up when fifth to Givemehoperosa over nine furlongs at Leopardstown and if this step up in trip can aid further improvement, she should be thereabouts.

Queenstown has put up two very good runs, and found only the smart Azazat, stablemate to the selection, too good at Leopardstown. She should go well again.
