Morph Speed could be a smart recruit for hurdles. Peaking at a rating of 91 on the flat, he has been running close to his best form this summer, notably finishing just a length off Star Kissed in the Cork Derby on his penultimate start. His finest hour came at this track when he won the Kingdom Gold Cup so if he can hurdle reasonably well on debut, he could be tough to beat.

Minella Diamond is another to note. Willie Lanigan’s gelding won his bumper here in July and acquitted himself reasonably well when second to Baltic Bird on his hurdles debut at Cork.

This could go to Harry Kelly’s mare Walk In Time. She won at Tipperary on her penultimate start, proving too strong for the useful Emily In Paris, and she showed she can be competitive off a 9lb higher rating when beaten less than six lengths into fifth at Cork on her most recent start. She has only had six starts over hurdles and can improve again in what doesn’t look the strongest heat.

Slaney Bank is a little more riskier as a proposition but her fourth on handicap hurdle debut at Kilbeggan was encouraging and trainer Mark Fahey has added cheekpieces for the first time today. She could well step forward again and will be a danger to all if so. Mr Social won at Tramore last week and could go well again despite a 6lb rise.

The consistent Hard Target may be able to secure a deserved win. Harry Kelly’s gelding has finished in the frame on his last four starts, which includes two close seconds on his most recent appearances. He has only gone up 5lb in the weights so it seems likely he should at least hit the frame again on ground - and over a trip - that will suit him well.

Charle Brune is interesting. He was previously trained in Yorkshire by Neil Melchie, before rejoining Tipperary-based Tom Shanahan, for whom he finished an encouraging fifth in a Ballinrobe handicap hurdle earlier this month. That was coming off a 329-day break so he may well be a fitter horse now.

Willie Mullins may hold the key to this handicap hurdle, and it’s surely significant that Paul Townend has opted to ride We’llhavewan. Well backed for his first of two starts at Galway, he was probably given a little too much to do when sixth to Building Bridges. He then finished a relatively close ninth to Ifiwerearichman, when dropping down to two miles for a hotter contest. They were two good efforts in respect of this contest, and he remains potentially well treated off a mark of 116 for the champion trainer.

Foveros was sixth to Ambitious Fellow in the two-mile-six-furlong handicap hurdle feature race on the penultimate day of Galway, which was a fine effort. He has had a stop-start career but is a talented sort on his day and will be a threat if able to step forward again. Both Streets Of Doyen and Tullybeg disappointed in the Midlands National, but their form before that was good, and they shouldn’t be discounted to bounce back.

Captain Conby should be too good for his rivals on chase debut. Dusty Sheehy’s gelding has some very strong handicap hurdle form in his book, including finishing sixth to Langer Dan in last season’s Coral Cup. A mark of 135 is a fair standard over hurdles and should tell, notwithstanding his inexperience over fences.

A similar case can be made for Annexation, whose mark of 130 over hurdles is a good standard in the context of this beginners’ chase. Henry de Bromhead’s gelding showed his wellbeing when finsihing second to An Mhi at Downpatrick and may strip fitter now.

SELECTION: CAPTAIN CONBY

This is a decent contest for the time of year with the top trio all coming in with respectable form. Salvador Ziggy may prove the best of them to stay unbeaten over fences. He was a good hurdler last season, progressing through the ranks at around this time of the year and he only found Good Time Jonny too good in a Pertemps Final after a break. He is two from two over fences so far, which includes a comfortable win over the useful Hubrisko. Back on a nice, quick surface, he could be hard to peg back.

Toss Again provides strong opposition. For a horse to win a handicap chase as competitive as the Galway Blazers on only his second start says plenty, and it also copper fastens his mark of 140. He could improve again and clearly stays well. In contrast, Solness, whose second to the classy Hercule Du Seuil in a Galway Grade 3 reads well, does need to show he can be just as effective up to this trip.

SELECTION: SALVADOR ZIGGY

Stealthy Tom has finished in the first two on all bar one of his last eight starts and he looks sure to go well again. Enda Bolger’s gelding got the better of Foxy Jacks to win the Connacht National but saw that form reversed in the Midlands equivalent. Nonetheless, that most recent start was a fine effort, with the front pair pulling clear, and now he returns to the scene of a course-and-distance win, with missing Galway a potential blessing.

Lifetime Ambition didn’t miss Galway, running respectably when mid division in the Plate, and this looks a softer contest for him, so expect a good show from the front. Ballykeel and The Little Yank also make appeal, the latter finding only Sole Pretender too good here over a shorter trip and likely to appreciate this greater test of stamina.

SELECTION: STEALTHY TOM

It’s hard to look beyond Aurora Vega. The sister to Facile Vega won comfortably on debut at Sligo and looks well up to carrying a penalty against just five other rivals.

Huntsgrove may prove best of the rest. He has shown ability in his two bumper starts, finishing fourth at the Curragh and third at Limerick for his latest run.
