On the assumption that the stands’ side is the place to be, the Aidan O’Brien-trained newcomer Celtic Chieftain can make a winning debut. A half-brother to two winners, one of them as a juvenile, the son of No Nay Never is sure to know his job. O’Brien often targets some of his smarter early types at this particular track.

The Michael O’Callaghan-trained Tommy McJohn has an ideal draw which allows jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle to go whichever side he chooses. Another well-bred colt, he rates a serious threat to the Ballydoyle representative.

SELECTION: CELTIC CHIEFTAIN

A nine-time winner on the polytrack at Dundalk, Inishmot Prince can gain a breakthrough success on grass. The Tom McCourt-trained six-year-old has yet to get his head in front from 13 attempts on turf but has been placed in stronger company on a few occasions. Off a mark 15lb below his all-weather rating, it is difficult to ignore his claims.

Keke caught the eye when staying on late in a similar grade at Navan last month. She is open to further improvement after just the six starts.

SELECTION: INISHMOT PRINCE

One Smack Mac, a full-brother to a winning debutant who went on to Group 3 success as a juvenile, catches the eye on his racecourse debut. The Ger Lyons-trained colt is sure to be well forward coming from these quarters and given his pedigree, it would be no surprise to see him go on to better things as the season progresses. Snapdragon, a son of No Nay Never, related to three previous winners, represents Aidan O’Brien. Again, the fact that the colt has his introduction at this venue suggests that he must be doing things nicely at home.

SELECTION: ONE SMACK MAC

The Eddie Lynam-trained Rough Diamond can register a second success over course and distance. Despite his form figures, the seven-year-old comes into this contest in reasonably decent form. Having caught the eye on a couple of occasions at Dundalk over the winter, the gelding made a satisfactory reappearance on grass at the Curragh recently.

Midnight Fire, runner-up in that aforementioned race, tends to reserve his best form for headquarters. However, if running to anywhere near the level he did last time, the Eddie and Patrick Harty-trained sprinter has to hold leading claims.

SELECTION: ROUGH DIAMOND

Having run with plenty of credit on all six starts in maiden company, Kortez Bay can make a winning handicap debut. Despite failing to get his head in front thus far, the Sheila Lavery-trained colt has done little wrong in any of those races.

A combination of bad draws and bumping into above-average types have contributed to his blank card. In this slightly less taxing company, the colt can make the breakthrough. Eclipse Emerald, who finished a place ahead of Kortez Bay at the Curragh last time, should again be a serious threat.

The Fozzy Stack-trained colt has less experience with only the two starts but at the same time, that does allow him more scope for improvement now handicapping.

SELECTION: KORTEZ BAY

Next best: Eclipse Emerald

Sea The Boss looks like a filly who could be much more the finished article this season. The daughter of Sea The Moon made a winning debut at Tipperary last September, before stepping up in class less than a week later when a creditable fourth in listed grade at Leopardstown. Although disappointing on her final start as a juvenile, a third run in just over a month may have caught up with her. Madam Celeste has been absent since making a winning debut at Dundalk in November. While that is quite a long way away from this exalted company, the Ger Lyons-trained filly overcame greenness to beat a subsequent smart sort.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Old Faithful should be open to further improvement now that he steps up to middle distances for the first time. The Siyouni colt was placed in a trio of decent maidens last season, while also making a very satisfactory reappearance in that same grade at the Curragh recently. With the benefit of that outing, he looks the one to beat.

Naas fourth, Gibbs Island can also make his presence felt as one with potential to improve.

SELECTION: OLD FAITHFUL

Red Viburnum is very hard to oppose in this finale. The Dermot Weld-trained filly was beaten less than a length by two subsequent group winners on her debut at the Curragh last August, before stepping up to Group 1 company with a very respectable fifth back at that same venue the following month. With her trainer having made a flying start to the new campaign, it is hard to see the Moyglare-owned filly beaten.

Quadruple has shaped well enough on her two starts to date to suggest she can win a maiden at some point. However, the Ger Lyons-trained filly looks somewhat unfortunate to bump into a potentially exciting filly here.
