A LARGE entry of 110 horses made up the start list for the five-year-old RDS qualifier at Mullingar on Wednesday, which offered just 12 qualifying places for the Dublin Horse Show.

Of the 110, 39 were clear in the first round to progress to the second; 22 then kept a clean sheet to progress to the third. Of these, 13 provided a triple clear round so, after all that jumping just one combination – Billy Sinnott and Springrove Supernova – heartbreakingly missed out on a place in Dublin.

Ennisnag Stud’s Dutch-bred stallion Mendoza VDL, ridden by Harry Wood, produced the winning round when they broke the beam in a very fast 32.43secs. Bred by VDL Stud, he is by Harley VDL out of a Cardento mare.

Gemma Phelan and her own Philly Fogerty (Aganix Du Seigneur x Harlequin du Carel) were second when almost two seconds slower in 34.26. The gelding was bred by Michael Griffin.

Third was Mikey Pender riding his own Belgian-bred Servilla Van De Berghoeve Z (Stakkato Gold x Diamant De Semilly) in 34.38. Leah Stack picked up fourth place with Noel Cawley’s Laurina, a mare by Stakkato Gold out of the Greg Broderick-ridden former Grand Prix mount Rincarina.

David Splaine guided his father Robert’s home-bred stallion Coolcorran Lone Ranger (Tyson) to fifth, while Francis Derwin and MMG Candy Lady (Sligo Candy Boy x Lord Z) were sixth.

Seventh place went to Tholm Keane with Diarmuid Hurley’s Boherdeal Russel (Boherdeal Clover x Russel), and eighth was Greenhall Mullord (Dignified Van’t Zorgvliet x Cruising) with Ciaran Moran in the saddle.

Vincent Byrne booked his ticket in ninth with Freestone Farm’s Sumas Knockout (Tyson x VDL Arkansas), who was bred by Suma Stud. Paul McDermott was 10th with Seamus Carew’s home-bred Rhondda (Diamant De Semilly x Hermes De Reve).

The 11th and 12th places went to Monbeg Balou (Balou du Rouet x Zacharov TN), partnered by Sophie Richards, and Lady May Lou (Emerald Van’t Ruytershof x Spatacus), ridden by Shane Moloney.
