THE home international calendar opened as usual in Ballindenisk, where due to special permission and not a little organising, a band of UK-based Olympic-listed Irish riders made the trip. They featured prominently in the main classes, but the top ranking in the CCI4*-L fell to Michael McNally with his impressive youngster Eclipto. Chasing all the way, Fred Scala (Everon Vivendi) filled second, from Steven Smith (Galwaybay Echo) and Austin O’Connor with Colorado Blue.

All roads led to Munster for the spring international at Millstreet in June. With final Olympic qualifications up for grabs, the event attracted a host of eventing royalty, as well as a strong home contingent. New Zealand star Tim Price and Falco put their stamp on the CCI4*-L, and while his wife Jonelle filled two of top three in the short format equivalent, the top spot fell once again to Michael McNally and the talking horse of the summer, Eclipto.

Disappointing

It was hugely disappointing to learn that Camphire announced its cancellation for the second year in succession. The prospect of running behind closed doors was a financial step too far for the organisers, but it is hoped that this popular fixture will return to the calendar in 2022.

Filling the gap, the indefatigable Danny Dulohery, supported by Richard Ames and Semalease Ltd, hosted two international fixtures, the second of which in July staged a CCI4*-S. Clare Abbott demonstrated the abilities of the smart Jewelent to win this showcase from Steven Smith with HHS Elegance.

Millstreet made its second full appearance of the season in late August and this time around the international entries were not so forthcoming. Australian rider Bill Levett (Lates Quin) headed the seven finishers in the CCI4*-L, while regular Australian visitor Kevin McNab landed a one-two in the CCI4*-S.

The season closed as it opened with the traditional fixture at Ballindenisk. Entries for the long format classes were limited, with victory in the four strong CCI4*-L going to British visitor Tom Jackson (Bahira M). Compatriot Angus Smales headed the three-star long with Mount Corbitt Storm, while Michael Ryan scored a good win in the CCI4*-S with Claragh Mountain.
