BILLY Lee was in fine form at Roscommon on Tuesday evening as he bagged a treble at the midlands venue.

He teamed up with Paddy Twomey to secure his first victory aboard J’adore Chris in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden as the 1/3 shot landed the odds.

The Churchill filly travelled well to lead passing the two pole in the seven-furlong contest and was always doing enough late on to hold William F Browne by three-quarters of a length.

J’adore Chris had been runner-up on her first two starts and Twomey, who trains the winner for Denise, Sarah and Aine Callaghan, said afterwards: “She had two good runs and I’d say she didn’t quite stay running over slightly further in Killarney last time.

“We could look at a winners’ race or may look at the Ingabelle Stakes on Champions Weekend. She is qualified for the Foran final as well.”

Strike two

A couple of races later Lee landed the Murray Ambulance Fillies Maiden on the Willie McCreery-trained Counterculture.

The Sixties Icon filly went to post a 4/5 shot and made all in the seven-furlong contest, pulling clear in the final furlong for a three-and-a-quarter-length win over Clever And Cool.

McCreery trains the winner for Joya Burns and said: “She’s a grand, big, honest filly and she loved the ease in the ground.

“It was a good opportunity for her, she’s a straightforward filly and tries very hard. We’ll try and get blacktype before the end of the year with her.”

Lucky number three

Lee’s haul was completed in the finale when Barry Connell’s Avondale claimed the Sean Cleary Memorial Handicap.

The Gleneagles gelding was prominent throughout and the 6/1 shot kicked on under two furlongs out for a length-and-a-half win over Wisdomofhindsight.

“I’d say soft ground probably suited him. He’s a big horse and we bought him as a dual-purpose sort,” said Connell.

“He looks like a National Hunt horse and you could see him jumping a fence but we’ll keep him going on the flat for this campaign as he’s only four. We’ll keep him a maiden (over jumps) until next summer.”

GER O’Leary has a fine strike rate at Roscommon and was on the mark twice, with the help of Shane Foley.

Come On The Lads went to post a well supported 5/6 favourite in the opening ten-furlong claimer and duly did the business in fine style.

He came to lead a furlong and a half from home before securing a two-and-three-quarter-length win over Edge Of Darkness.

“He did it nicely there and I’m delighted to get the win. He’s very straightforward,” said O’Leary.

“Whether he’s going to a new home or not now remains to be seen. We can’t make plans until we see what happens next.” Gavin Cromwell subsequently claimed the winner for €13,000.

Cosy winner

Sea Eagle was also a cosy winner when claiming the Conor Cassidy Car Sales Handicap.

Foley led under two furlongs from home on the 5/1 shot and he soon asserted to post an easy four-and-three-quarter-length win over Lord Raven.

“Hopefully the handicapper was out having coffee or something!” said O’Leary.

“We have him in the (Irish) Cambridgeshire and he might just get into the tail end of it if it came up soft. I’m very thankful for the luck. We’ve members of the (Purosangue) syndicate here tonight.”

SIGH No More had come from the clouds to win on her last start at Galway and snatched victory from an unpromising looking position again to follow up in the Irish EBF Auction Series Race.

The 11/10 favourite was driven along before the straight in the seven-furlong contest but responded well for Dylan Browne McMonagle.

Joseph O’Brien’s charge grabbed her stablemate Baltray Lady a furlong and a half down and went away going to the line to record a length-and-a-quarter win in the colours of Brosnan Racing.

“I jumped well, sat outside the leader, and she travelled well for the first half but once I got down around the bend she was still very raw,” said Browne McMonagle.

“She took plenty of helping along but I knew she was always going to stay well, as you saw in Galway when she won her maiden. Hopefully she can keep progressing and I think she’s going to come on again for that.”

Big future

Another horse with his future ahead of him is Poetic Sound, who got going late to land the mile and a half District Speciality Coffee Apprentice Maiden for Ger Lyons.

James Ryan was pushing along in fourth turning for home on the 5/1 shot but he hit top gear to lead passing the furlong marker and record a length-and-a-half win over Trapalanda.

Shane Lyons said: “The horse is very green and will only improve. He’ll be a beautiful horse next year, that’s what we’re looking forward to.

“It’s a great result for the owner/breeder John Keaney. He owned Yavana’s Pace and she’s in the pedigree (full-sister to the dam).

“We’re delighted for William and John Flood as well, who stand Poet’s Word. They are long time family friends.”

This win reduced Ryan’s claim to 3lb.
