A DISPERSAL sale by racehorse owner Mike Newbould was the main attraction at Wednesday’s one day sale in Doncaster. The best horses to carry his black and white silks are Third Time Lucki and West Cork, both winners of good races at Cheltenham in recent seasons for trainer Dan Skelton.

Third Time Lucki duly topped this week’s sale when knocked down to Fergal O’Brien’s partner Sally Randall for £190,000. Randall had to see off both Skelton and Gordon Elliott to secure the eight-year-old on behalf of owners Lee and Mark Craze.

West Cork was retained by Newbould when bidding stopped at £85,000 but he did sell an unraced four-year-old named Lathan for £60,000 to agent Jerry McGrath. A chesnut son of Doctor Dino, Lathan was a €90,000 store at the 2022 Goffs Land Rover Sale and was trained by Skelton but didn’t make the track.

Trainer Kevin Ryan sold the 85-rated three-year-old colt Quintus Arrius for £50,000 to Peter Niven. The son of Mehmas has won twice this year over six furlongs for owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum.

Mag Mullins sold recent Cork maiden hurdle winner Kayce Dutton for just £15,000 to Adam Podgson, and stablemate Sean Og, a 95-rated maiden hurdler, was sold for £22,000 to Stuart Nicholson.

Gigginstown House Stud sold a handful of horses on Wednesday. Highland Charge, an eight-year-old winner of four races for trainer Noel Meade - most recently a handicap hurdle at Kilbeggan in July - now joins Eric McNamara who paid £16,000 for him. Agent Tom Malone and trainer Jamie Snowden paid the same amount for Gigginstown’s Farceur Du Large, a 130-rated chaser who contested some top handicap chases last season without success.

Eric McNamara, who bought Real Steel at this venue for £27,000 in May 2022, also picked up the nine-year-old gelding Scarpia for £14,000. Trained by Nicky Henderson, Scarpia won a small three-mile handicap hurdle at Worcester in June on his latest start off a mark of 122.

Goffs UK managing director Tim Kent said: “We would like to extend a special thank you to Mike and Eileen Newbould for their support in sending their partial dispersal to this sale. Third Time Lucki came into the sale as the highest rated chaser offered anywhere this year and it was very rewarding to see him sell so well.”
