Lot 147: Cotai Glory colt ex La Cuvee

Consigned by Railstown Stud

A lovely foal and a great walker. He is a half-brother to Group 1 winner Champers Elysees and his full-brother is in America. Even though they are by the same sire, this foal is very different to his full-brother. He reminds me very much of Champers Elysees in his attitude. He has a great mind.

The foal’s sire, Cotai Glory, reminds me of a cheetah, there is a lot of speed and blood with him. The idea of going to Cotai Glory with the dam was to put more speed into the pedigree and the stallion puts size into his stock and this foal is a good size. La Cuvee is back in foal to Elzaam [sire of Champers Elysees], and I am hoping I can get a filly out of her. I really like the female line out of that family, and I could do with another one – it gives you more options!

Who are the members of the team?

Francis Quinn (Railstown Stud) is unbelievable! I know Francis a long time and I love the job he does. He just keeps it simple. And all of his team perform around that. He has a great team - Gina O’Gorman, Liannea Parker and John Moore – they are a great bunch of people. One thing about Francis is that if you ask him a question, he will give you a very straight answer. You mightn’t always like to hear what he has to say but it’s straight, there is no fluff! The foal has been with Francis since he was weaned and is prepping him for the sale.

What is the best result you have had from the sale in the past?

Champers Elysees is without a doubt the best result I have had. I was delighted that Johnny Murtagh got her, and I was delighted with what he did. Obviously, it has helped the whole thing – mare, me, all of that! It was unfortunate that her races were in the middle of Covid but I loved following her. It felt like a huge achievement. No matter how small a breeder you are, anything can happen. But it started with Tattersalls Ireland – I deem it to be a very lucky place!

OLIVE O’CONNOR

Tell us about your consignment?

I have two yearlings, a River Boyne (Lot 34) and a Make Believe (Lot 41) in the sale. Make Believe is always a dependable sire. He is one of those consistent sires in the sales ring and on the track. The River Boyne is interesting, this is one of his first crop yearlings.

Of the foals, I have a cross section from an Invincible Spirit (Lot 138) to some of the new and upcoming sires like Nando Parrado (Lot 123). The Invincible Spirit filly is a half-sister to five winners, including Bless Him who was an out and out blacktype performer. The Nando Parrado colt is the first foal out of a winning mare and is a sister to three winners. I have a Kessaar colt (Lot 143) who is a very good-walking, straightforward foal. The Invincible Army filly (Lot 110) is a very nice, strong foal with a good walk.

I have one mare, Nathaniella (Lot 213), who was a tough racemare herself, by Nathaniel out of a Pivotal mare. She has a nice covering by Phoenix Of Spain who has done really well this year with a 40% strike-rate.

Tell us about your team?

I have a great team at home, Ciara, Siobhan, Gregor, and Mati. They run the show at home and do all the grafting. At the sales I have a regular team that help me. They do a very good job to present the horses to clients.

What is your best result at the sale?

I always support the sale and have done well at it over the last couple of years. There are always a few gems in the middle of it. There is always something to be found. The sale is getting better year on year.
