THE store sales season kicks off next Tuesday when Tattersalls Ireland hosts its one-day May Store Sale.
This sale is in its fifth year and has quickly established itself as a significant auction, even though the past two editions have been staged in August due to Covid-19.
Last year’s sale saw a record top price of €115,000 and the clearance rate of 78% was also a record.
The recent Aintree Grand National meeting produced a couple of a big winners for May Store Sale graduates. Lookaway, winner of the Grade 2 bumper, was picked up for just €6,200 at the sale in 2020. After winning a point-to-point he was moved on for £170,000.
Party Business won the opening race at Aintree on Grand National day, a Grade 3 handicap hurdle, and he was a €40,000 buy at the 2019 May Store Sale.
Other notable graduates to have made headlines last season include Shantreusse (€50,000), an impressive winner of a Grade 2 novice hurdle at Clonmel for Henry de Bromhead, and the Grade 3 Imperial Cup Handicap Hurdle winner Suprise Package, who cost only €4,200 as a store here.
The 2022 catalogue features own or half-brothers and sisters to several blacktype winners including the own-brother to Grade 1 Challow Hurdle winner Poetic Rhythm, a half-brother to the Grade 1 A.P. Smithwick Memorial Handicap winner Show Court, a half-brother to the Grade 1 Flogas Novice Chase winner Apache Stronghold, a half-sister to the Grade 3 Sandown Gold Cup Handicap Chase winner Talkischeap, and a half-brother to the Grade 3 handicap hurdle winner Invicta Lake.
