A LOT of attention has been given to Altior’s half-brother ahead of next week’s Goffs Land Rover Sale, but there is plenty more to shout about in the catalogue.

Without a doubt, this National Hunt store sale has gone from strength in strength in the past 10 to 15 years. The sale was established in 1996 and, for this writer, it was Hardy Eustace and Brave Inca who first put the June Sale in the headlines – and that was 21 years ago.

Since then both the prices and the number of top-class graduates to have emerged each year appear to have grown almost continuously. The fact that Land Rover has remained as the sale sponsor for so many years speaks volumes too.

The €100,000 bumper that carries the sale’s name at the Punchestown Festival has its own roll of honour. Altior was actually beaten in that race but winners include Hardy Eustace, Newmill, Petit Mouchoir and Commander Of Fleet, all of whom went on to Grade 1 success.

The 2022 winner Absolute Notions was sold for an astonishing €370,000 at the Goffs Punchestown Sale two days later. Winning vendor Evergreen Stud received a new Land Rover Defender as their prize.

The aforementioned Commander Of Fleet was one of five Land Rover graduates to win at this year’s Cheltenham Festival. They included Grade 1 mares’ hurdle winner Marie’s Rock and Grade 1 Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle winner Sir Gerhard.

In recent time Paisley Park was the ‘cover star’ for the Land Rover. Now the mantle has been passed to Sir Gerhard, who followed up his Cheltenham win with another Grade 1 victory at the Punchestown Festival. The Jeremy gelding was a €72,000 purchase at the Land Rover, consigned by Peter Molony’s Rathmore Stud.

The King George VI Chase winner Tornado Flyer (€63,000) is another high-profile graduate of the sale.

A strong sire line-up in the Land Rover includes Authorized, Blue Bresil, Camelot, Coastal Path, Doctor Dino, Flemensfirth, Great Pretender, Jukebox Jury, Kapgarde, Martaline, Maxios, Muhtathir, No Risk At All, Shantou, Soldier Of Fortune, and Walk In The Park.
