THE prolific Layfayette has given the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale a huge boost this season, not that the sale needed it.

Noel Meade’s recent Group 2 winner was bought by the trainer for €54,000 at this sale in 2019, which incidentally was the last time the sale was staged in Fairyhouse. Due to Covid-19, the past two editions were moved to Newmarket.

Now Ireland’s only breeze-up sale is back home and the signs are good, based on business at Newmarket and Doncaster in recent weeks.

There are 236 juveniles in the catalogue, much the same as last year when the clearance rate was an astonishing 91%. The average price a year ago was £32,325 and the median was £20,000.

The results on the track have been extremely good too. Eight of the top 10 lots sold last year have won, some of them at stakes level. King X J is probably the star so far. Bought for £100,000, he won the €300,000 Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Race and has since been listed-placed for Michael O’Callaghan.

Further down the list, French Claim (£36,000) stands out. He finished third in the Derby Trial at Leopardstown on Sunday for Paddy Twomey.

Among the eyecatching lots in the 2022 catalogue are a Caravaggio half-brother to listed winner Sirici, an Invincible Spirit half-brother to the Group 2 winner Banimpire, whose half-sister is the dam of Twilight Payment, a Lope De Vega colt out of Group 1-placed Strathnaver from the family of UAE 1000 Guineas winner Siyaadah, a Sea The Stars full-brother to listed winner Rakan out of Group 2-winning Tarfasha, a No Nay Never colt out of Group 3 Musidora Stakes winner Aviate, and an Army Mule colt out of two-time winning two-year-old mare Glamnation.

Established stallions with progeny in the catalogue include Australia, Dark Angel, Exceed And Excel, Invincible Spirit, Kingman, Kodiac, Make Believe, Night Of Thunder. There are also juveniles on offer by young sires of note such as Ardad, Churchill, El Kabeir, Expert Eye, Harry Angel, Kessaar, Mehmas, Profitable, Sioux Nation, Tasleet, U S Navy Flag and Zoustar.

Some 18 two-year-olds are qualified for French owners’ premiums and 78 of those catalogued are qualified for the Swedish Derby and Oaks series.
